The Early Works - The Sign Of Leo / The Girl At The Monceau Bakery / Suzanne?s Career (French, DVD): Eric Rohmer The Early Works - The Sign Of Leo / The Girl At The Monceau Bakery / Suzanne’s Career (French, DVD)
Eric Rohmer
R245 Discovery Miles 2 450 Shipped within 7 - 11 working days

The Sign Of Leo (Le Signe Du Lion) 1962
Eric Rohmer’s debut feature tells the cautionary tale of a Paris-based American, born under the sign of Leo and confident that luck is on his side. In anticipation of an inheritance from a recently deceased aunt, he freely wracks up debts only to find himself in dire straits when his windfall fails to materialise...

The Girl At The Monceau Bakery (La Boulangere De Monceau) 1962
A charming short stpry shot on the streets of Paris in Rohmer’s trademark naturalistic style. Barbet Schroeder plays a young man whose affections are divided between two beautiful girls - one he meets on the street and another who works in a local bakery - but finds himself faced with the dilemma of choosing between them.

Suzanne’s Career (La Carriere De Suzanne) 1963
In Rohmer’s tale of adolescent naiveté, Bertrand, a shy and reserved student, finds himself consumed with jealousy and resentment as he observes his roguishly confident best friend Guillaume exploit the generosity of the sweetly seductive Suzanne.

Ikiru (Japanese, DVD): Akira Kurosawa Ikiru (Japanese, DVD)
Akira Kurosawa; Starring Takashi Shimura 2
R316 Discovery Miles 3 160 Shipped within 7 - 11 working days

The story of a man diagnosed with stomach cancer, Kurosawa's film is a serious contemplation of the nature of existence and the question of how we find meaning in our lives.

Opening with a shot of an x-ray, showing the main character's stomach, Ikiru tells the tale of a dedicated, downtrodden civil servant who, diagnosed with a fatal cancer, learns to change his dull, unfulfilled existence, and suddenly discovers a zest for life.

Plunging first into self-pity, then a bout of hedonistic pleasure-seeking on the frenetic streets of post-war Tokyo, Watanabe - the film's hero - finally finds satisfaction through building a children's playground.

Beautifully played by Takashi Shimura (who starred in 21 of Kurosawa's films), Ikiru is an intensely lyrical and moving film, and was one of Kurosawa's own favourites.

In black & white.

Three Colours Red (French, DVD): Krzysztof Kieslowski Three Colours Red (French, DVD)
Krzysztof Kieslowski; Starring Jean-Louis Trintignant, Irene Jacob 2
R110 Discovery Miles 1 100 Shipped within 10 - 15 working days

The third and final part of Kieslowski's trilogy has been acclaimed as his masterpiece. Immaculately played by an extraordinary cast, Red masterfully plays on Kieslowski's interpretation of brotherhood and destiny.

Irene Jacob is stunning as young model who meets retired judge by chance when she rescues his dog from a car accident. Jean-Louise Trintignant is utterly compelling as the embittered judge who spends his days eavesdropping on his neighbors' phone conversations. Their initially fiery relationship mellows into a close friendship that ultimately liberates them both.

A final twist of fate reveals the destinies of the characters from all three parts of the trilogy

Code Unknown - Subtitled (French, DVD): Juliette Binoche Code Unknown - Subtitled (French, DVD)
Juliette Binoche; Directed by Michael Haneke 1
R127 Discovery Miles 1 270 Shipped within 7 - 11 working days

On a busy Paris boulevard, a youth scornfully tosses a crumpled paper bag into the outstretched hands of a beggar woman.

This is the bond which, for an instant, links several very different characters: Anne, an actress; her war photo- grapher boyfriend Georges; his farmer father and younger brother Jean, who, contrary to his father's wishes, has no interest in inheriting the farm; Amandou, a music teacher for deaf-mute children, and his family, who originate from Africa; and Maria a Romanian immigrant.

Written and directed by Michael Haneke, one of modern cinema's most distinctive and ambitious directors, Code Unknown is a complex film of powerful emotional force and a fascinating study of the subtle connections and barriers between people, social class, race, and the difficulty of communicating in the modern world.

In French with English subtitles.
