Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (Hardcover): Jagdish P. Singh, Surya N. Thakur Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (Hardcover)
Jagdish P. Singh, Surya N. Thakur
R3,330 Discovery Miles 33 300 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is basically an emission spectroscopy technique where atoms and ions are primarily formed in their excited states as a result of interaction between a tightly focused laser beam and the material sample. The interaction between matter and high-density photons generates a plasma plume, which evolves with time and may eventually acquire thermodynamic equilibrium. One of the important features of this technique is that it does not require any sample preparation, unlike conventional spectroscopic analytical techniques. Samples in the form of solids, liquids, gels, gases, plasmas and biological materials (like teeth, leaf or blood) can be studied with almost equal ease. LIBS has rapidly developed into a major analytical technology with the capability of detecting all chemical elements in a sample, of real- time response, and of close-contact or stand-off analysis of targets. The present book has been written by active specialists in this field, it includes the basic principles, the latest developments in instrumentation and the applications of LIBS . It will be useful to analytical chemists and spectroscopists as an important source of information and also to graduate students and researchers engaged in the fields of combustion, environmental science, and planetary and space exploration.

Applications of Time-of-Flight and Orbitrap Mass Spectrometry in Environmental, Food, Doping, and Forensic Analysis, Volume 71... Applications of Time-of-Flight and Orbitrap Mass Spectrometry in Environmental, Food, Doping, and Forensic Analysis, Volume 71 (Hardcover)
Sandra Perez, Peter Eichhorn, Damia Barcelo
R6,165 R4,890 Discovery Miles 48 900 Save R1,275 (21%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Applications of Time-of-Flight and Orbitrap Mass Spectrometry in Environmental, Food, Doping, and Forensic Analysis deals with the use of high-resolution mass spectrometry (MS) in the analysis of small organic molecules. Over the past few years, time-of-flight (ToF) and Orbitrap MS have both experienced tremendous growth in a great number of analytical sectors and are now well established in many laboratories where high requirements are placed on analytical performance. This book gives a head-to-head comparison of these two technologies that compete directly with each other. As users with hands-on experience in both techniques, the authors provide a balanced description of the strengths and weaknesses of both techniques. In the vast majority of cases, ToF-MS and Orbitrap-MS have been used for qualitative purposes, mainly identification of discrete molecular entities such as drug metabolites or transformation products of environmental contaminants. This paradigm is now changing as quantitative capabilities are increasingly being explored, as are non-target approaches for unbiased broad-scope screening. In view of the continuous innovation of high-resolution MS instrument manufacturers in designing and developing more powerful machines, technological advances in both hardware and software are considerable, with many novel applications. This book summarizes and analyzes these trends. The compilation of selected examples from diverse analytical fields will allow the readers to discover not only the potential of high-resolution MS in their sector, but also shows advances in other fields that rely on hi-res MS.

The Hydrogen Bond and the Water Molecule - The Physics and Chemistry of Water, Aqueous and Bio-Media (Hardcover): Yves Marechal The Hydrogen Bond and the Water Molecule - The Physics and Chemistry of Water, Aqueous and Bio-Media (Hardcover)
Yves Marechal
R4,183 Discovery Miles 41 830 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Hydrogen Bond and the Water Molecule offers a synthesis of what is known and currently being researched on the topic of hydrogen bonds and water molecules. The most simple water molecular, H2O, is a fascinating but poorly understood molecule. Its unique ability to attract an exceptionally large number of hydrogen bonds induces the formation of a dense "hydrogen bond network" that has the potential to modify the properties of the surrounding molecules and their reactivities. The crucial role that water molecules play is described in this book. The author begins by providing an overview of the thermodynamical and structural properties of H-bonds before examining their much less known dynamical properties, which makes them appear as centres of reactivity. Methods used to observe these components are also reviewed. In the second part of the book the role played by the dense H-bond network developed by H2O molecules is examined. First in ice, where it has important atmospheric consequences, then in liquid water, and finally in macromolecules where it sheds some original light on the fundamental question "How is it that without water and hydrogen bonds life would not exist?."
This book will be of interest to researchers in the fields of physics, chemistry, biochemistry and molecular biology. It can also serve as a teaching aid for students attending course in chemical physics, chemistry or molecular biology. Engineers involved the water industry would benefit from reading this book, as would scientists working in pharmaceutics, cosmetics and materials.
* overview of what is known and being researched on the topic of hydrogen bonds and water molecules
* reviews methods used to observe interactions between water molecules and hydrogen bonds
* examines role of H-bond network developed by H2O molecules

Design of Electronic Devices Using Redox-Active Organic Molecules and Their Porous Coordination Networks (Paperback, 1st ed.... Design of Electronic Devices Using Redox-Active Organic Molecules and Their Porous Coordination Networks (Paperback, 1st ed. 2021)
Jaejun Kim
R5,061 Discovery Miles 50 610 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book addresses the development of electronic devices using redox-active organic molecules and their porous coordination networks (PCNs), and highlights the importance of the molecular arrangement. Redox-active organic molecules hold considerable promise as flexible electronic elements, because their electronic state can easily be controlled using external energy. Although various kinds of redox-active organic molecules have been synthesized, attempts to apply them to electronic devices have been limited, owing to the lack of proper structural design. Moreover, ligand-based redox-active PCNs remain largely unexplored because of the limited availability of redox-active ligands. In addition to developing new redox-active organic molecules, in order to design electronic devices based on these molecules/PCNs, it is essential to understand the connections between their molecular arrangement, electrical properties, and redox activity. In this thesis, the redox-active organic molecule 2,5,8-tri(4-pyridyl)1,3-diazaphenalene (TPDAP), which features a large pi plane and multi-intermolecular interactivity, is used to develop a resistive switching memory device. In addition, its PCNs are synthesized to fabricate chemiresistive sensors, and the electrical properties are modulated using post-synthetic modification. Each mechanism is systematically investigated by means of structural determination and well-defined control experiments. Subsequently, the book proposes general guidelines for designing electronic devices using redox-active organic molecules. The book will appeal to a broad range of readers, from basic scientists to materials engineers, as well as general, non-expert readers.
