Books > Religion & Spirituality > Christianity > Christian liturgy, prayerbooks & hymnals
This book explores the Liturgy as the manifestation by cultic signs
of Christian revelation, the 'setting' of the Liturgy in terms of
architectural space, iconography and music, and the poetic response
which the revelation the Liturgy carries can produce. The
conclusion offers a synthetic statement of the unity of religion,
cosmology and art. Aidan Nichols makes the case for Christianity's
capacity to inspire high culture - both in principle and through
well-chosen historical examples which draw on the best in
Catholicism, Eastern Orthodoxy and Anglicanism.
Contains 569 hymns including 21 canticles, three musical settings
for Holy Communion plus outline for a Chorale Service, Service of
the Word, Propers, Responses, Psalms, Prayers, Morning and Evening
Prayer, Marriage, and Burial of the Dead. Green cloth cover with
embossed gold title and symbol.
This lovely volume provides a broad and rich source of blessings,
many of which have never before been published. There are blessings
for the seasons; for minor seasonal events like Mothering Sunday
and Harvest, and for special events, like school and pet services,
weddings, and the dedication of homes and church premises. A
section of biblical exhortations, ascriptions and doxologies is
also included. Those who would like to write their own blessings
for public use will find guidance in the helpful introduction,
which looks at the theology and nature of a 'blessing' and its
constituent parts.
How do we respond to God, our family, and our colleagues when our
whole world is shattered by the death of a loved one? For Spoken
Word artist Dai Woolridge, there were sometimes no words. In this
honest and personal story of grief, Dai offers a creative response
to God. Working through a timeline of grief, he shares his
experience of burn-out, anti-depressants and the question of why
doesn't God heal? Using poetry, prayers and scripture, Dai looks
back at his cries to God, and His words back to him. This is a book
that will give words to those who are going through personal loss,
and for those who have grieved, are grieving or have never yet
grieved.
"That prayer is most likely to pierce heaven which first pierces
one's own heart." For the Puritans, prayer was neither casual nor
dull. Their prayers were passionate affairs, from earnestly
pleading for mercy to joyful praise. These rich expressions of deep
Christian faith are a shining example of holy living. The Puritan
combination of warm piety and careful intellect have fueled a
renaissance of interest in their movement. This combination is on
display in Piercing Heaven, a collection of carefully selected
prayers from leading Puritans. The language in these prayers has
been slightly updated for a modern audience while still retaining
the elevated tone of the Puritans. With prayers from Richard
Baxter, Thomas Brooks, John Owen, and many more, each prayer
reminds us that heartfelt prayer is central to the Christian life.
Originally published in 2004. Inculturation - the creative and
dynamic relationship between the Christian message and culture or
cultures - is of interest to many churches throughout the world,
particularly since the Second Vatican Council made it part of the
Roman Catholic agenda. This book looks at the question of the
inculturation of Christian worship, particularly in the Eucharist.
Looking at the relationship of worship and culture requires
insights from both theology and anthropology; Tovey develops the
tools to interconnect perspectives into an interdisciplinary
exploration of different models of inculturation. Inculturation of
Christian Worship is both interdisciplinary and ecumenical in
approach. Case studies are drawn from the Ethiopian Orthodox
Church, African Independent Churches, The Roman Catholic Church and
the Anglican Communion. While there is a focus on Africa for
particular examples, the issues are discussed in a world wide
context.

A brand new edition of the ultimate combination of traditional
hymns and modern worship songs. 'Mission Praise' is a much-loved
hymn book, and has remained so since its outset in 1984. Initially
used for Billy Graham's Mission England rallies - where thousands
of people converted to Christianity - it has become a staple of
worship throughout the UK and across the world. It was the first
hymn book of its kind, introducing more modern styles of music into
worship yet retaining the best of traditional hymnody loved by
churchgoers of every age. This new, expanded edition of 'Complete
Mission Praise' includes the whole of the existing collection of
over 1000 songs and hymns, and adds the best new songs in various
styles from the past few years. This brand new edition has been put
together by 'Mission Praise''s original editorial team of Peter
Horrobin and Greg Leavers, and contains - in this 30th anniversary
year - over 100 new songs and has, by popular request, been split
into two volumes in order to be more user-friendly.

Christianity Today 2023 Book Award Finalist (Bible &
Devotional) Sheltering Mercy helps us rediscover the rich treasures
of the Psalms--through free-verse prayer renderings of their poems
and hymns--as a guide to personal devotion and meditation. The
church has always used the Psalms as part of its prayer life, and
they have inspired countless other prayers. This book contains 75
prayers drawn from Psalms 1-75, providing lyrical sketches of what
authors Ryan Whitaker Smith and Dan Wilt have seen, heard, and felt
while sojourning in the Psalms. While each prayer corresponds to a
particular psalm and touches on its themes and ideas, it is not a
new translation of the Psalms or an attempt to modernize or
contextualize their content or language. Rather, the prayers are
responses to the Psalms written in harmony with Scripture. These
prayers help us quiet our hearts before God and welcome us into a
safe place amid the storms of life. This artful, poetic, and
classic devotional book features compelling custom illustrations
and beautiful hardcover binding, offering a fresh way to reflect on
and pray the Psalms.
The Celtic spiritual tradition is marked by the belief that what is
deepest in us, beyond the distortions of ignorance or wrongdoing,
is the image of God. Its second major characteristic is a trust in
the essential goodness of creation, which it regards as a
revelation of God, thus avoiding the pitfall of separating spirit
and matter. The simple prayers of "Each Day & Each Night" are
the new expressions of the old worlds and imagery of Carmichael's
collection. It is hoped that they will help us realise anew that
the life of heaven is inseparably woven into the life of earth.
A collection of communion liturgies and other resources covering
Advent, Christmas, Epiphany, Lent, Holy Week, Easter, Ascension,
Pentecost, Trinity and Transfiguration. Thom Shuman writes: `So
much of the ordinary is truly extraordinary, so much of what we
take for granted are the soft petals of grace strewn on the paths
we walk, so much of the air we breathe is filled with wonder, hope,
joy and peace.' An awareness Thom first experienced while on
sabbatical at the spiritual centres of Taize, the Abbey of
Gethsemani and Iona, where these liturgies and prayers first took
root. Thom lives in Columbus, Ohio and is an Associate member of
the Iona Community.
A professor contemplates the ruins of his life while delivering a
passionate final lecture; a city girl suffers an unaccountably
cruel twist of fate in a stranger's apartment; a rising executive
flies blindly toward his past; and, darkly fleeting, a young boy
haunts the lives of all who cross his path. It is the district of
Suffolk that binds them together, a place so carefully and
imaginatively constructed that it evokes the novels of William
Faulkner. Through a beautifully crafted mosaic of different voices
brought to life in dazzling, original prose, this novel creates a
world that breaks new ground in literary convention and leaves a
mark long after its poignant end.
The bestselling Intercessions Handbook is designed for use in a
wide range of formal and informal settings. In two introductory
chapters, John Pritchard considers the importance and challenges of
the vital task of intercession. He then offers practical examples
of intercessions in traditional services, all-age worship, small
groups and personal devotions. Material for seasons, major
festivals and special events is also included.
