Full-color rattle board book that expalins lessons that can be
learned from the saints
This book grew out of a slightly reluctant sermon series which, as
it turned out, became 'one of the most talked about in our church',
says the author. There was a sense of rediscovering the 10
commandments, 'and so coming to appreciate and value them afresh',
he enthuses. We see the commandments as a summary of God's law for
Israel. The rest of the law in the Old Testament is an unpacking of
these commands. The New Testament then shows us a variety of
repetition, enlargement and fulfilment of the different commands.
The result is a hugely informative and helpful overview of
Christian living and ethics. A side benefit comes in the form of
worked examples of how to move from the Old Testament to the New
Testament. This is a popular, clear and accessible volume, with
pastoral application for today's believer. Tragically, it is often
the absence of guidelines that is a cause of confusion and
heartache in today's society.

Each summer, tens of thousands of American Jews attend residential
camps, where they may see Hebrew signs, sing and dance to Hebrew
songs, and hear a camp-specific hybrid language register called
Camp Hebraized English, as in: "Let's hear some ruach (spirit) in
this chadar ochel (dining hall)!" Using historical and
sociolinguistic methods, this book explains how camp directors and
staff came to infuse Hebrew in creative ways and how their
rationales and practices have evolved from the early 20th century
to today. Some Jewish leaders worry that Camp Hebraized English
impedes Hebrew acquisition, while others recognize its power to
strengthen campers' bonds with Israel, Judaism, and the Jewish
people. Hebrew Infusion explores these conflicting ideologies,
showing how hybrid language can serve a formative role in fostering
religious, diasporic communities. The insightful analysis and
engaging descriptions of camp life will appeal to anyone interested
in language, education, or American Jewish culture.
Drawing on examples from British world expressions of Christianity,
this collection further greater understanding of religion as a
critical element of modern children's and young people's history.
It builds on emerging scholarship that challenges the view that
religion had a solely negative impact on nineteenth- and
twentieth-century children, or that 'secularization' is the only
lens to apply to childhood and religion. Putting forth the argument
that religion was an abiding influence among British world children
throughout the nineteenth and most of the twentieth centuries, this
volume places 'religion' at the center of analysis and discussion.
At the same time, it positions the religious factor within a
broader social and cultural framework. The essays focus on the
historical contexts in which religion was formative for children in
various 'British' settings denoted as 'Anglo' or 'colonial' during
the nineteenth and early- to mid-twentieth centuries.
Martina Kumlehn undertakes the first study of the chequered history
of the reception accorded to St Johna (TM)s Gospel in 20th century
conceptions of religious education; in five individual studies she
describes an arc from liberal religious education to symbol
didactics. The sixth study proposes its own approach to bible
didactics which engages with Paul Ricoeura (TM)s narrative theory
to take up the particular narratology of St Johna (TM)s Gospel and
reflect on it didactically. Placed within the area of conflict
between phenomenology and semiotics, St Johna (TM)s Gospel is
presented as a school of perception and a catalyst for pluralist
readings.
There's hope for childhood. Despite a perfect storm of hostile
forces that are robbing children of a healthy childhood, courageous
parents and teachers who know what's best for children are turning
the tide. Johann Christoph Arnold, whose books on education,
parenting, and relationships have helped more than a million
readers through life's challenges, draws on the stories and voices
of parents and educators on the ground, and a wealth of personal
experience. He surveys the drastic changes in the lives of
children, but also the groundswell of grassroots advocacy and
action that he believes will lead to the triumph of common sense
and time-tested wisdom. Arnold takes on technology, standardized
testing, overstimulation, academic pressure, marketing to children,
over-diagnosis and much more, calling on everyone who loves
children to combat these threats to childhood and find creative
ways to help children flourish. Every parent, teacher, and
childcare provider has the power to make a difference, by giving
children time to play, access to nature, and personal attention,
and most of all, by defending their right to remain children.
This brief introduction to making effective arguments helps readers

the book enables students in a wide variety of courses to improve
the clarity of their writing and public speaking. It equips readers
to formulate firmly grounded, clearly articulated, and logically

reason well. This supplemental text is especially suitable for use
in Christian colleges and seminaries and includes classroom
discussion questions.

Of all the books of the Bible, few are as fascinating or as
intimidating as Revelation. Four grim horsemen, the Antichrist, the
ten-horned beast, the ultimate battle at Armageddon, the "mark of
the beast." It's no wonder that these images have griped the
imagination of so many--and have been variously interpreted as
symbolizing everything from Hitler and Gorbachev to credit cards
and the Internet. Is the book of Revelation a blueprint for the
future? A book of powerful symbolic imagery with warnings for the
church? Is it essentially an imaginative depiction of historical
events in the first century? Four Views on the Book of Revelation
explores four interpretations of the book of the Apocalypse:
Preterist - a historical interpretation, arguing that most of
John's prophecies occurred in the first century, soon after his
writing of them. Idealist - a spiritual or symbolic interpretation,
arguing that the events in Revelation are not literal, and that
apocalyptic literature requires a different approach than the
Gospels or Epistles. Classical dispensationalism - a literal
interpretation based on a reading of Revelation that pays close
attention to the rules of grammar and the separate eras of
covenantal history. Progressive dispensationalism - a modification
of classical that has its root in the understanding of Christ's
reign beginning immediately after the resurrection. The
Counterpoints series presents a comparison and critique of
scholarly views on topics important to Christians that are both
fair-minded and respectful of the biblical text. Each volume is a
one-stop reference that allows readers to evaluate the different
positions on a specific issue and form their own, educated opinion.

Warren shares practical, Christ-centered advice on how to

life. With a focus on the spiritual truths of patience, kindness,
truth, and forgiveness, you will learn to make love your dominant
life value. This Study Guide is filled with helpful discussion

"Fasting" has been called the forgotten spiritual discipline.
Although it is found throughout Scripture, it is often neglected by
modern Christians. Is there power in fasting? Does it really make a
difference? How does fasting relate to prayer? In this study,
Ashlee Alley considers the biblical basis for fasting and explores
ways modern Christians can make this ancient discipline part of
their faith walk. "Converge Bible Studies" is a series of topical
Bible studies based on the "Common English Bible." Each title in
the series consists of four studies on a common topic or theme.
"Converge" can be used by small groups, classes, or individuals.
Primary Scripture passages are included for ease of study, as are
questions designed to encourage both personal reflection and group
conversation. The topics and Scriptures in "Converge" come together
to transform readers relationships with others, themselves, and
God."
