For more than 20 years, Lois Burdett has been introducing
Shakespeare to primary school pupils. Working with her students,
many as young as seven, she makes Shakespeare's plays come
wonderfully alive for young eyes and ears. The texts are rewritten
as simple rhyming verse and illustrated by her pupils' own lively
colour illustrations of the characters and the action. Her books
and workshops for teachers have captured the attention and
imagination of parents, educators, and lovers of Shakespeare around
the world.
Three-Fingered Jack," the protagonist of this 1800 novel, is based
on the escaped slave and Jamaican folk hero Jack Mansong, who was
believed to have gained his strength from the Afro-Caribbean
religion of obeah, or "obi." His story, told in an inventive mix of
styles, is a rousing and sympathetic account of an individual's
attempt to combat slavery while defending family honour.
Historically significant for its portrayal of a slave rebellion and
of the practice of obeah, Obi is also a fast-paced and lively
novel, blending religion, politics, and romance. This Broadview
edition includes a critical introduction and a selection of
contemporary documents, including historical and literary
treatments of obeah and accounts of an eighteenth-century slave
rebellion.

Let's Do Poetry in Primary School is a fun, accessible and very
practical guide to give teachers the tools, the mindset and the
confidence to put poetry at the heart of the classroom, and
everyday learning. The book includes games and warm-ups, ideas for
cross-curricular activities, an anthology of age appropriate poems,
tools for reading and performing poems, setting up a poetry-rich
classroom and ultimately, shows all it takes is six or so poetic
forms with which to create language-rich and expressive responses
to all the topic and curricular work that you cover in the academic
year.
