Toxoplasmosis is one of the most important food-borne illnesses and foetal maternal inflammatory syndromes. Currently, there is no safe and effective approved therapy against foetal maternal complication or persistent chronic infection. Toxoplasma is an intracellular organism. About 1.5 billion people world-wide are predicted to have toxoplasmosis, frequently with unknown lifelong health consequences. Toxoplasma is classified as "Category B pathogen" according to the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and National Institute of Health (NIH). The organisms reside in muscles and brain in cyst forms for the lifetime of the host awaiting reactivation. This book discusses several topics which include foetal and maternal toxoplasmosis; toxoplasma gondii and suicide and homicide; toxoplasmosis in several animals including cattle, goats, swine, dogs, and kittens; and molecular diagnosis in toxoplasmosis.

This text is in no danger of incomplete identification of where it should fit in the bibliographical spectrum of radiological monographs. It can be placed in many areas - radiology of the chest, lccupational diseases, pneumoconioses, clinical medicine. In each, it would be informative and helpful. In part, this is inherent in the subject but, equally, it reflects the good judgment ofthe editors in selecting both subjects to be covered and contri butors who could succeed in their delineation in terms of current usage and current issues. Radiology of lung diseases has deep roots. Roentgen announced his dis covery of x-rays in 1895. By the next year, the new technique was used to study lung disease. On October 1, 1896, Francis H. Williams was able to report in the Boston Medical and Surgical Journal, "I have examined about 40 cases of pulmonary tuberculosis ... " In his classic text, The Roentgen Rays in Medicine and Surgery, published in 1901, thoracic diseases took pride of place in the 658-page volume. It is of further interest that just as Glyn Thomas here emphasizes the importance of technique, so did Wil liams in his writings."

Chagas disease is a parasitosis caused by Trypanosoma cruzi, that affects approximately 10 million people around the world, mainly in Latin America. There are different types of transmission, and in the last few years, due to the increase in human migration, this pathology has been detected in other continents. Awareness that this disease is now found in places far from endemic areas is relevant since it leads to the development of strategies to prevent potential sources of transmission. The disease was discovered 100 years ago, and until now, no vaccine has been developed and the drugs currently in use, benznidazole and nifurtimox, have limited efficacy and potentially serious side effects. Chagas disease patients can have gastrointestinal, heart and nervous system related complications, requiring precise and rapid methods of diagnosis. The biology of T. cruzi has been intensively studied allowing for the translation of basic scientific knowledge into a number of selected drug candidates for the development of a more specific treatment. Coverage of the latest research techniques and advances in the topics mentioned above, and, most importantly, the new therapeutic targets noted for the development of an improved therapy will be discussed.

As part of its "Programme for the prevention of health hazards caused by industrial substances", the Berufsge- nossenschaft der chemischen Industrie (BG Chemie, Em- ployment Accident Insurance Fund of the Chemical Indus- try) began in 1977 to investigate the toxicity of those chemicals which are widely used, have many different ap- plications and are suspected of being dangerous to health, in particular of having long-term effects. The in- vestigations consist of a literature search and - depending on the results - commissions of experimental studies. It is hoped by means of this testing to close gaps in our know- ledge and to increase the scientific validity of the required risk assessments. The results of the toxicological in- vestigations carried out by BG Chemie, and the resulting substance assessments have been published in German since 1987 in the form of 132 "Toxikologische Bewer- tungen" ("Toxicological Evaluations") up to now. In order to make this useful information internation- ally available, BG Chemie began in October 1990 to pub- lish them as a book series in English, of which the sixth volume (containing 11 individual evaluations) is presented here.
