In 'Pom-Poms Up , From Puberty to the Pythons and beyond, the
British born, American raised and RADA trained actress reveals her
life, loves and laughs as the 'Glamorous PYTHON GIRL' who famously
kept her cool and a straight face in the heat of the humour
generated by Cleese, Palin, Jones, Gilliam and the late Chapman,
The 'MONTY' Pythons.
SHORTLISTED FOR THE NATIONAL BOOK CRITICS CIRCLE The world can't
seem to get enough of Dolly Parton. Her image is blazoned across
T-shirts, she burns on desks as blasphemous candles, and well into
her seventies she continues to grace awards stages, arenas and talk
shows where women of a certain age are rarely seen. Yet not so long
ago, Dolly was best known by many people as the punch line of a
boob joke. So, what happened? In this affectionate, sharply
insightful book, Sarah Smarsh charts Dolly's meteoric rise against
the backdrop of her working-class roots. Drawing on her own
experience growing up in rural Kansas, Smarsh crafts a resonant
portrait of Parton's cultural importance, above all for the
often-unheard women who populate her songs: struggling mothers,
pregnant teenagers, diner waitresses with deadbeat boyfriends.
Candid, intimate and searching, She Come By It Natural captures the
enduring appeal of this singular star.

From the iconic stylist and fashion provocateur whose designs
transformed culture - bringing the glitz of Studio 54 and the
sophistication of Sex and the City to the mainstream - comes a
playful yet intimate memoir of a life spent challenging
conventions. Carrie Bradshaw's pairing of a tutu with a tank top is
one of the most iconic outfits ever seen on television - and a look
that turned avant-garde New York designer and stylist Patricia
Field into a household name. But before she was crowned the fairy
godmother of haute couture, Field was the owner of the longtime
East Village emporium Pat Field, a haven for drag queens, club
kids, starving artists, NYU freshmen, and creative visionaries
alike. Presiding over downtown with her distinctive vermillion hair
and a constantly lit cigarette, Patricia was a rock 'n' roll den
mother to everyone from Amanda Lepore to Lady Bunny to Patti Smith,
with her store providing the city's eccentrics with a place to
discover a sense of family, home, and a rhinestone bedazzled
bustier or two. In Pat in the City, Patricia describes her journey
from scrappy Queens kid peddling men's pants to the fashion world's
most notorious renegade. As the daughter of immigrant parents,
Field learned the principles of glamour from her entrepreneurial
mother, and applied her NYU lessons on democracy to inform a
fashion ethos that would reach millions. From her Studio 54
disco-glam styling to her award-winning work in The Devil Wears
Prada and Sex and the City to today's buzzy costuming in Emily in
Paris, Field's inimitable styling has pushed the envelope and
created trends that have become the culture standard. Now in her
seventies, Patricia Field is ready to tell her story - not to take
a final bow, but to spread her credo of challenging convention and
filling the world with joy and dancing.
Peter Beaven's tale leads us through the pitfalls and triumphs of a
career in choir directing and church music, orchestral conducting,
and professional singing in choirs and stage works. His teaching
experiences are just as hair-raising as his performing life. Being
there at the inception of the GCSE music exam, as a teacher, he
felt it wasn't an improvement on the previous exam and became
disenchanted with education, in general, and music education in
particular. The author maintains that he failed every exam he ever
sat, adding much weight to his argument, but also admits to a
modicum of success along the way. Despite earlier difficulties with
a genetic neuropathy, he conquered the disabilities to regain an
organ technique at the age of fifteen, which has served him well
for over fifty years. His adventures with the military have been a
twenty-year expedition through extraordinary happenings,
personalities, and experiences. All worthwhile but in marked
contrast to many other facets of his career.
