Studs Terkel was an American icon who had no use for America's cult
of celebrity. He was a leftist who valued human beings over
political dogma. In scores of books and thousands of radio and
television broadcasts, Studs paid attention - and respect - to
"ordinary" human beings of all classes and colours, as they talked
about their lives as workers, dreamers, survivors. Alan Wieder's
Studs Terkel: Politics, Culture, But Mostly Conversation is the
first comprehensive book about this man. Drawing from over fifty
interviews of people who knew and worked with Studs, Alan Wieder
creates a multi-dimensional portrait of a run-of-the-mill guy from
Chicago who, in public life, became an acclaimed author and
raconteur, while managing, in his private life, to remain a mensch.
We see Studs, the eminent oral historian, the inveterate and
selfless supporter of radical causes, especially civil rights. We
see the actor, the writer, the radio host, the jazz lover, whose
early work in television earned him a notorious place on the
McCarthy blacklist. We also see Studs the family man and devoted
husband to his adored wife, Ida. Studs Terkel: Politics, Culture,
But Mostly Conversation allows us to realize the importance of
reaching through our own daily realities - increasingly clogged
with disembodied, impersonal interaction - to find value in actual
face-time with real humans. Wieder's book also shows us why such
contact might be crucial to those of us in movements rising up
against global tyranny and injustice. The book is simply the best
introduction available to this remarkable man. Reading it will lead
people to Terkel's enormous body of work, with benefits they will
cherish thr
In this remarkable dual memoir, film legend Martin Sheen and his
accomplished actor/director son Emilio Estevez share the stories of
their lives while charting a spiritual journey through the Spain of
their ancestors.
At twenty-one, still a struggling actor, Martin and his wife,
Janet, welcomed their firstborn, Emilio, who was quickly followed
by three more children. Emilio had a special relationship with
Martin: they often mirrored each other's passions and sometimes
clashed in their differences. After Martin and Emilio traveled
together to India for the movie "Gandhi," the beginnings of a
spiritual awakening eventually led both men to Spain. Along the
famed Camino de Santiago pilgrimage path, Emilio directed Martin in
"The Way," bringing generations together in the region of Spain
where Martin's father was born and near where Emilio's own son had
moved to marry and live.
With vivid, behind-the-scenes anecdotes, "Along the Way" is a
striking, stirring, funny story--a family saga that is as universal
in its rebellions and regrets, aspirations and triumphs.

As the candidacies of Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders have proven,
Americans are mad as hell about the problems facing our country.
George Noory hears these problems every night, all night, and this
is how he would deal with them. This is Mad as Hell. --- I'm angry
because sometimes I feel like a stranger in America. We live in a
dangerous world that is sorely in need of an effective political
system that deals with the ongoing destruction of the middle class,
an aging population, permeable borders, technology out of control,
and shocking, mindless violence and wars. But we can bring back the
America that makes us proud. It will take hard work and pulling
together as a society. People are stressed because they don't know
where the world is heading or where it is taking them. With a radio
show heard by millions, I consider myself not an entertainer or
someone to dictate how we should live, but a facilitator who can
help guide the path chosen. I have been called a voice in the
darkness. The concepts I deal with are not only on the cutting edge
of science and technology, but with subjects as provocative as
aliens and angels, as challenging as supervolcanos and the fire and
brimstone of the End Time. Join me by reading why I am mad . . .
and maybe you will get as angry as I am about conditions in the
country we love.
The Hollywood screen legend brings his wit, insight, entertaining
stories and wisdom to answer questions about every aspect of his long
life - inspiring us all to Be More Michael Caine.
I'm always asked questions - by fans, by other actors and friends, by
my grandchildren. They want to know how I've lasted so long, how I
handle fame, why I chose to do some of my films, which films and actors
I like best and so forth.
They also want to know what makes me tick, what makes me get up in the
morning in my 90s, and whether I'll ever retire. (The answer to that
one is "No!")
Over a long life, I've learnt a lot and had the opportunity to reflect.
I've seen a new generation grow up, among them my own grandchildren,
facing the world with all its challenges and problems.
I hope they'll find Don't Look Back, You'll Trip Over: My Guide to Life
helps them to be optimistic - and shows that anyone can blow the bloody
doors off.
An iconic book, from one of our best-loved actors: this is Michael
Caine at his very best.
SHE'S JUST LIKE THE REST OF US: overstuffed purse, always losing
keys, high-maintenance hair, snack guilt after an evening binge.
But she's something different, too.
Hoda Kotb grew up in two cultures--one where summers meant playing
at the foot of the ancient pyramids and another where she had to
meet her junior prom date at the local 7-Eleven to spare them both
the wrath of her conservative Egyptian parents. She's traveled the
globe for network television, smuggling videotapes in her shoes and
stepping along roads riddled with land mines. She's weathered the
devastation of Hurricane Katrina, and a personal Category 5 as
well: divorce and breast cancer in the same year. And if that's not
scary enough, she then began cohosting the fourth hour of "Today
"with Kathie Lee Gifford. "(Oh, c'mon, KLG That's funny . . . put
down the huge pour of Chardonnay and laugh with us.) "
"HODA "reads just like Hoda--light, funny, positive, and positively
inspiring.
