Books > Gardening > Greenhouses, conservatories, patios
This book is for both teachers and students of universities and
colleges who are working on, or are interested in, the subject of
'Greenhouse Technology', or in dealing with subjects related to
crop science. This book also targets researchers, extension workers
and individual entrepreneurs to provide a clear and handy idea
about greenhouse technology. The book is divided into 8 chapters.
Chapter 1 contains the introduction, which elaborates on the reason
and necessity of cultivation under greenhouse, the definition of
greenhouse, and the history and present scenario of greenhouse
cultivation. Chapter 2 narrates the meaning of greenhouse
technology, the planning of greenhouse, the subjects involved in
it, the fundamental points which are required to be understood for
different climatic situations and the purpose of a greenhouse.
Chapter 3 deals with the importance of different climatic and
non-climatic factors in selecting proper greenhouse technology.
This chapter also highlights the different measuring systems
required for greenhouse technology. Chapter 4 describes in detail
the design and construction of a greenhouse, which includes basic
forms and types of greenhouses, its different covering materials,
particular aspects of construction, cost estimates for different
types of greenhouses etc. Chapter 5 introduces the innovative
'Bamboo Greenhouse Technology. It starts with the preparation of
bamboo and ends with the detailed design and construction aspects
of this unique low-cost, scientific and highly efficient
greenhouse. Chapter 6 is the most important chapter for greenhouse
technology. It elaborates on the control mechanisms for different
climatic components, such as light, temperature, humidity,
precipitation, and carbon dioxide. Chapter 7 discusses the
important aspects of cultivation and special methods of crop
husbandry which are essential for greenhouse cultivation. These
include crop selection, bed preparation, fertilizer application,
irrigation, canopy management, training and pruning, and pest
management. Chapter 8 is the last chapter, and it provides some
tips for the cultivation of a few important crops which are
generally deemed suitable for the greenhouse.
This book is designed to acquire concepts and techniques for the
sustainable development and management technology for plant
production, development and conservation. The book is six s that
includes introduction, techniques in the creation and management of
tree nursery, plant propagation [plant reproduction], management in
the nursery, production of plants in the nursery and the
agroforestry tree domestication technology to technicians and
farmers interested or practicing Agroforestry and applied
silviculture.
The book carries 17 s dealing with space saving, maximizing the
efficiency of fertigation, mulching, integrated pest, disease and
nutrient management (IPDNM) and engineering aspects of
structures.Net houses, poly houses, rain shelters, poly tunnels,
uses of plastics in horticulture and cold chains for storage and
marketing are elaborated. Hydroponics and aeroponics are discussed.
Unlike other aspects of agricultural sciences, little literature is
available on protected cultivation in India. Protected cultivation
in India has vast potential under changing environmental parameters
and reducing land and water resources. The book contains
consolidated and concise information on design, construction and
maintenance of protected structures and production technologies
under protected cultivation with contributions from eminent
scientists and researchers from institute like DIHAR- DRDO, ICAR,
CIAE, CIPHET, CPCT, IIVR, CAZRI, NRCs and various SAUs.

- Professor of Botany - I have written this book for the benefit of
those who wish to grow suitable plants to provide flowers in a
greenhouse or conservatory or to use for room decoration, during
all seasons of the year. Plants which do not flower freely and are
not of great decorative value have been omitted, and only those
which I have found to be ideal for the purpose have been dealt with
in this book. There is a vast number of greenhouse plants to be
seen in botanical gardens and large private establishments, but
only a limited number are offered for sale by nurserymen. From
these plant catalogues, which they issue free of charge, I have
selected the most decorative kinds and have given the fullest
details of their cultivation. Therefore, by choosing plants from
the "lists of flowering plants for every season of the year" given
on p. 203, it will be found possible to provide a continuous
display of flowers in the heated or unheated greenhouse. I am
indebted to Messrs. T. Bath & Co., Ltd., Greenhouse
Specialists, 14 Norwood Road, Herne Hill, London, S.E. 24, for
supplying the photographs of types of greenhouses, ventilators and
heating appliances. I am also grateful to Dr. A. J. Willis, Reader
in Botany in the University of Bristol, for advice and assistance
in the preparation of this book. G. F. GARDINER
The concern for the greenhouse emissions and the gases resulting in
global warming is rising by every passing day. There has been an
emphasis on an increased construction of greenhouses so that there
is preservation of the plants and so that the gases released are
not harmful for the environment. This book Greenhouse Design takes
the readers through the various aspects of designing a greenhouse
design such as the considerations taken while designing, the goals
of designs, the costs involved and the final impact on the
environment.
This gardening style book contains ideas about how to transform
small spaces into idyllic retreats. The book provides practical
advice on how to create 17 different leafy havens, ranging from
design considerations, through installation, to plant maintenance.
Spending time in your garden is one of life's great pleasures and
adding hard landscaping such as paths, patios and decking will
provide not only a structure to any garden design, but also the
opportunity for you to enjoy your garden to the fullest. Whether
you are looking to create a vibrant entertainment space or tranquil
secluded spot, or simply provide easy access to important areas, a
path, patio or decked area can help you realise your dreams. It can
also add value to your property and is much easier to do than it
may at first appear, as Paul Wagland shows. This book takes you
through the entire process of creating a range of hard-landscaped
areas for your garden, offering detailed advice on how to design a
space to suit your needs, clear instructions on building processes
and inspirational ideas on planting and furnishing the finished
product. All aspects of the work are clearly illustrated by, with
step-by-step instructions on all the key building techniques. Also
includes guidance on building other garden features such as ponds
and walls.
This illustrated catalogue contains 1500 of the best greenhouse plants, selected by the author from first-hand experience. She groups her plant selection according to their most useful function - as specimen plants for impact, climbers for background and shade, trailing plants, foliage plants, flowering and fruiting plants for attractive seasonal effects, and aquatic plants.;The book gives advice and information on providing the best conditions for growing plants in a conservatory, including ways of regulating light, temperature and humidity. There are also ideas for interior landscaping. Cultivation of plants is described in "Plant Care" which tells all that is needed to know to achieve success in growing exotic plants in a conservatory.;The author is a regular presenter of BBC TV's "Gardener's World" and a panellist on BBC Radio's "Gardener's Question Time" and has been in charge of the glasshouses at the Royal Horticultural Society garden at Wisley. Other books she has written include "A Handbook of Greehouse and Conservatory Plants", "The Gardeners' World Book of House Plants" and "The Gardeners' World Book of Container Gardening".
