Steel Drums and Steelbands - A History (Paperback): Angela Smith Steel Drums and Steelbands - A History (Paperback)
Angela Smith
R1,599 Discovery Miles 15 990 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Steel Drums and Steelbands: A History is a vivid account of the events that led to the "accidental" invention of the steel drum: the only acoustic musical instrument invented in the 20th century. Angela Smith walks readers through the evolution of the steel drum from an object of scorn and tool of violence to one of the most studied, performed, and appreciated musical instruments today. Smith explores the development of the modern steelband, from its roots in African slavery in early Trinidad to the vast array of experiments in technological innovation and to the current explosion of steelbands in American schools. The book offers insights directly from major contributors of the steelband movement with sections devoted exclusively to pioneers and innovators. Drawing on seven years of research, repeated trips to the birthplace of the steel drum, Trinidad, and interviews with steelband pioneers, Smith takes readers far beyond the sunny associations of the steel drum with island vacations, cruise ships, and multiple encores of "Yellow Bird." Digging deep into Trinidad's history-a tale of indigenous extermination and African slavery, of French settlement and Spanish and British colonialism before mid-century independence-Smith weaves an unforgettable narrative of talking drums, kalinda stick fights, tamboo bamboo bands, iron bands, calypso, Carnival, and the U. S. military. Together, all played major roles in the evolution of today's steelband and in the panman's journey from renegade to hero in the steelband's move from the panyards of Trinidad's poorest neighborhoods to the world's most prestigious concert halls. The reader will discover how an instrument created by teenage boys, descendants of African slaves, became a world musical phenomena. Steel Drums and Steelbands is the ideal introduction to the steel drum, steelbands, and their history.

Learning Senegalese Sabar - Dancers and Embodiment in New York and Dakar (Hardcover, New): Eleni Bizas Learning Senegalese Sabar - Dancers and Embodiment in New York and Dakar (Hardcover, New)
Eleni Bizas
R3,683 Discovery Miles 36 830 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Based on extensive ethnographic fieldwork in New York and Dakar, this book explores the Senegalese dance-rhythms Sabar from the research position of a dance student. It features a comparative analysis of the pedagogical techniques used in dance classes in New York and Dakar, which in turn shed light on different aesthetics and understandings of dance, as well as different ways of learning, in each context. Pointing to a loose network of teachers and students who travel between New York and Dakar around the practice of West African dance forms, the author discusses how this movement is maintained, what role the imagination plays in mobilizing participants and how the 'cultural flow' of the dances is 'punctuated' by national borders and socio-economic relationships. She explores the different meanings articulated around Sabar's transatlantic movement and examines how the dance floor provides the grounds for contested understandings, socio-economic relationships and broader discourses to be re-choreographed in each setting.

The Drum - A History (Hardcover, New): Matt Dean The Drum - A History (Hardcover, New)
Matt Dean
R2,246 Discovery Miles 22 460 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In The Drum: A History, drummer, instructor, and blogger Matt Dean details the earliest evidence of the drum from all regions of the planet, looking at cave paintings, statues, temple reliefs, and burial remains before finding existing relics of actual drums, which have survived thousands of years. Highlighting the different uses and customs associated with drumming, Dean examines how the drum developed across many cultures and over thousands of years before they became the instruments we know today. A celebration of this remarkable instrument, The Drum: A History explores how war, politics, trade routes, and religion have influenced the drum. Bringing its history to the present, Dean considers the modern cultural and commercial face of the drum, detailing its role in military settings and the development of the "modern drum kit." This study charts the evolution of the recording studio environment, as well as specific analysis of the development of drum heads, sticks, and the often overlooked role of women on the drum kit. In addition, there is a look at the continuing evolution of the drum and its role through surveys of main manufacturers and the increased dependence on electronic drums, sampling machines, and drum recorders. As the first book to detail the entire development of the drum, The Drum: A History will appeal to every drummer, regardless of genre or style, as well as any reader with a general interest in the evolution of this universal instrument.

Timpani Tone and the Interpretation of Baroque and Classical Music (Hardcover, New): Steven Schweizer Timpani Tone and the Interpretation of Baroque and Classical Music (Hardcover, New)
Steven Schweizer
R2,369 Discovery Miles 23 690 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Timpani Tone and the Interpretation of Baroque and Classical Music explores the nature, production, and evolution of timpani tone and provides insights into how to interpret the music of J. S. Bach, Handel, Haydn, and Mozart. In drawing on 31 years of experience, Steven L. Schweizer focuses on the components of timpani tone and methods for producing it. In so doing, he discusses the importance of timpani bowl type; mallets; playing style; physical gestures; choice of drums; mallet grip; legato, marcato, and staccato strokes; playing different parts of the timpano head; and psychological openness to the music in effectively shaping and coloring timpani parts.
In an acclaimed chapter on interpretation, Schweizer explores how timpanists can use knowledge of the composer's style, psychology, and musical intentions; phrasing and articulation; the musical score; and a conductor's gestures to effectively and convincingly play a part with emotional dynamism and power. The greater part of the book is devoted to the interpretation of Baroque and Classical orchestral and choral music. Meticulously drawing on original sources and authoritative scores from the seventeenth through nineteenth centuries, Schweizer convincingly demonstrates that timpanists were capable of producing a broader range of timpani tone earlier than is normally supposed. The increase in timpani size, covered timpani mallets, and thinner timpani heads increased the quality of timpani tone; therefore, today's timpanist's need not be entirely concerned with playing with very articulate sticks. In exhaustive sections on Bach, Handel, Haydn, and Mozart, Schweizer takes the reader on an odyssey through the interpretation of their symphonic and choral music.
Relying on Baroque and Classical performance practices, timpani notation, the composer's musical style, and definitive scores, he interprets timpani parts from major works of these composers. Schweizer pays particular attention to timpani tone, articulation, phrasing, and dynamic contouring: elements necessary to effectively communicate their part to listeners.

Practical Percussion - A Guide to the Instruments and Their Sources (Hardcover, Revised Edition): James Holland Practical Percussion - A Guide to the Instruments and Their Sources (Hardcover, Revised Edition)
James Holland
R2,552 Discovery Miles 25 520 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The second half of the twentieth century saw vast changes in all aspects of percussion - the instruments themselves, playing techniques, and percussion writing - plus the huge influence of pop music, jazz, and film scores. Additionally, the revolution in travel and communications has meant that composers have become much more aware of a seemingly endless variety of ethnic instruments from around the world. Holland aims to show the world of percussion as it is today, and to answer some common questions about it. Today's professional players frequently find themselves performing in many countries where the availability of percussion instruments can vary widely. Practical Percussion contains a section on manufacturers and suppliers all over the world. In addition to this list of manufacturers, the percussion requirements - both instruments and players - for some 1500 works are also listed. The foreword by Pierre Boulez further assists the reader in appreciating and understanding the richness, variety, and function of percussion instruments the world over.

The Beat Of My Drum - An Autobiography (Paperback): Michael Babatunde Olatunji The Beat Of My Drum - An Autobiography (Paperback)
Michael Babatunde Olatunji
R782 Discovery Miles 7 820 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Babatunde Olatunji's record album Drums of Passion proclaimed that the time had come for America to recognize Africa's cultural contributions to the music world. Through his many albums and live performances, the Nigerian drummer popularized West African traditional music and spread his message of racial harmony. In this long-awaited autobiography, Olatunji presents his life story and the philosophy that guided him. Olatunji influenced and inspired musicians for more than forty years-from luminaries to music students and the many ordinary people who participated in his drum circles. He writes about rhythm being "the soul of life," and about the healing power of the drum. Ultimately, The Beat of My Drum shows why at the time of his death in 2003, Olatunji had become, according to The New York Times, "the most visible African musician in the United States."

Percussionists - A Biographical Dictionary (Hardcover, New): Stephen L. Barnhart Percussionists - A Biographical Dictionary (Hardcover, New)
Stephen L. Barnhart
R2,515 Discovery Miles 25 150 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Alphabetically arranged entries summarize the professional careers of over 500 percussionists from various musical venues. Due to the shrinking global village, ethnic percussion was rediscovered and incorporated into the concert hall. Since percussion transcends all musical styles, it often is featured center stage as a solo or ensemble in heterogeneous musical settings. These excerpts represent percussionists who spent the majority of their lives performing as collaborative or solo artists or working as inventors or manufacturers of percussion instruments. Where applicable, select discographies, bibliographies, and videographies accompany the entries.

This detailed reference will appeal to professional percussionists, instructors, and percussion historians. Data has been compiled from numerous disparate sources and entries are cross referenced. Individual bibliographies include articles by or about the person and a general bibliography lists broader reference works. Discographies and videographies reflect samples of an artist's work. Select photographs complement the text.

Percussion Discography - An International Compilation of Solo and Chamber Percussion Music (Hardcover, New): Fernando Meza Percussion Discography - An International Compilation of Solo and Chamber Percussion Music (Hardcover, New)
Fernando Meza
R2,798 Discovery Miles 27 980 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

With its depth of coverage and international scope this first-of-its-kind volume contains a comprehensive collection of information on recordings (LPs, CDs, or Cassettes) in which percussion instruments are featured as solo instruments or as part of chamber ensembles, with the best of the literature and performers worldwide. Percussion Discography includes information about the composer of a particular work, the composition's title, the record company that issued the recording, the number of the recording, and the performer(s) on each recording. For example, at the entry for Paul Creston's widely known work Concertino for Marimba four separate recordings are cited. The discographic listings that deal entirely with music for which a written score is available as opposed to improvisational music are organized alphabetically by composer last name and within each composer's output by the title of the composition. Each compositional entry is followed by the record company and the catalog number. When possible, the performer's name is listed at the end of each entry. Indexes of performers and composition titles facilitate cross referencing and the directory of recording companies and distributors that have been mentioned in the discography aids those who wish to obtain an actual sound recording either through a record store or directly from the company. Containing some of the 20th century's most remarkable composers, arrangers, and performers, the volume will be useful to departments of composition at universities as a source for 20th-century compositional materials. Conservatory libraries and libraries at universities and colleges with music programs need the solid, in-depth coverage of the recorded percussion repertoire presented here. Performers, music educators, and students will find it an indispensable guide for expanding their knowledge of percussion literature.

Dhol - Drummers, Identities, and Modern Punjab (Hardcover): Gibb Schreffler Dhol - Drummers, Identities, and Modern Punjab (Hardcover)
Gibb Schreffler
R2,552 Discovery Miles 25 520 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

An icon of global Punjabi culture, the dhol drum inspires an unbridled love for the instrument far beyond its application to regional vernacular music. Yet the identities of dhol players within their local communities and the broadly conceived Punjabi nation remain obscure. Gibb Schreffler draws on two decades of research to investigate dhol's place among the cultural formations within Punjabi communities. Analyzing the identities of musicians, Schreffler illuminates concepts of musical performance, looks at how these concepts help create or articulate Punjabi social structure, and explores identity construction at the intersections of ethnicity, class, and nationality in Punjab and the diaspora. As he shows, understanding the identities of dhol players is an ethical necessity that acknowledges their place in Punjabi cultural history and helps to repair their representation. An engaging and rich ethnography, Dhol reveals a beloved instrumental form and the musical and social practices of its overlooked performers.

The 1903 Mrdang aur Tabla Vadanpaddhati is a revelatory text that has never been translated or analysed. It is a manual for playing the two most important drums of North Indian (Hindustani) music, the pakhavaj (mrdang) and the tabla. Owing to its relative obscurity, it is a source that has never been discussed in the literature on Hindustani music. Its author, Gurudev Patwardhan, was Vice Principal of V.D. Paluskar's first music school in Lahore from its inception in 1901 to 1908. Professor James Kippen provides the first translation of this immensely important text and examines its startling implications for rhythmic and metric theory. It is the earliest work on Indian drumming to contain a notation sufficiently precise to allow definitive reconstruction. The compositions are of considerable musical interest, for they can be readily realized on the tabla or pakhavaj. Kippen sets the work and objectives of the original author in the context of a rich historical, social and political background. By also discussing radical differences in the second edition of 1938, published by Gurudev's nephew, the vocalist Vinayakrao Patwardhan, Kippen illuminates the process by which 'tabla theory' was being created in the early 20th century. Both Patwardhans were enthusiastic supporters of Paluskar's nationalist imperatives, and active participants in his drive to institutionalize music, codify and publish notations of it, and promote a modern, Hindu vision of India wherein its identity could once again be linked to a glorious golden age in distant antiquity.
