Fewer than 20% of Baby Boom women will experience a secure retirement. Marriage, education, occupation, home ownership--these variables predict their future. Possession of all four indicates retirement security, and absence of any increases risk of old-age poverty. This riveting sociological study also examines the social relations and structures that will determine the retirement experience, options, and decisions for more than 40 million Baby Boom women. These women's material base and social status are examined through the use of empirical data, and the key predictors of their retirement are identified. The massive entry of Baby Boom women into the labor force increases the importance of retirement planning for working women. It comes at a time when existing research models and data are outdated and inadequate to effectively predict their future retirement experience. Over the past 30 years, American men and their spouses have benefited from the linear, undifferentiated model of the traditional male retirement. For the Baby Boom generation, however, the nature of work has changed significantly. The current retirement model may not serve Baby Boom men as well as in the past, let alone Baby Boom women. In contrast, this book offers a new, dynamic model that considers the social and work structures influencing women's lives and that accurately reflects the predictors and parameters of Baby Boom women's retirement.
"If you, a regular Joe like me, are not a movie star or an overpaid
professional baseball player or a lottery winner or a high-powered
executive, what are your chances of becoming a millionaire? Better
than you think--much better. And you don't have to strike oil to do
it. The secret? It's not glamorous, but it is simple, and almost
foolproof, because the math is in your favor. It's my story, and
the story of others who are quietly amassing 401(k) fortunes--and
the simple plan to make your story my story. " "From the Hardcover edition."

The U.S. retirement system, and the workers and retirees it was designed to help, face major challenges. Traditional pensions have become much less common, and individuals are increasingly responsible for planning and managing their own retirement savings accounts, such as 401(k) plans. Yet research shows that many households are ill-equipped for this task and have little or no retirement savings. Chapter 1 examines these challenges, drawing from prior work and others' research, as well as insights from a panel of retirement experts on how to better ensure a secure and adequate retirement, with dignity, for all. Chapter 2 examines key challenges U.S. participants face with: (1) unclaimed retirement accounts in the United States, and (2) complying with U.S. tax reporting requirements on their foreign retirement savings.
Strengthening the U.S. retirement system to be more accessible and financially sound is important to ensuring that all Americans can retire with dignity and security, and to managing the fiscal exposures to the federal government from various retirement-related programs. Currently, the U.S. retirement system, and many of the workers and retirees it was designed to help, face major challenges. Chapter 1 discusses (1) the fiscal risks and other challenges facing the U.S. retirement system, and (2) the need to re-evaluate our nation's approach to financing retirement. Chapters 2 and 3 discuss the Social Security full retirement age. Chapter 4 provides information on the benefits and disadvantages of alternate price indexes for measuring the cost of living for older Americans. Chapter 5 examines (1) how much in retirement savings is transferred to states as unclaimed property and what happens to those savings once transferred and (2) the steps IRS and DOL have taken to oversee these transfers and what improvements are needed. Chapter 6 discusses the availability of enhanced retirement benefits for federal law enforcement officers (LEOs). Chapters 7 and 8 focus on the Railroad Retirement Board (RRB), an independent federal agency, which administers retirement, survivor, disability, unemployment, and sickness insurance for railroad workers and their families. Chapters 9 and 10 provide information on the military retirement system.
Just about everyone over the age of 40 worries about how their retirement years will turn out. A secure retirement is seen as the culmination of a life well lived. To retire wealthy and live a dream life free of hard work is the ultimate desire of almost everyone. However, the reality is that not many people have the resources to enjoy a perfect retirement. There are many pitfalls in day-to-day life that prevent this, and although some of these are unexpected and unfair, generally speaking most of them can be prevented or planned for. This book will provide some practical guidelines in easily accessible language on how to retire financially secure. From savings to investments and pension plans to provident funds, this guide will set out exactly what you need to live life to the full, right to the end, with more than enough provisions.
American workers are primarily saving for retirement through their 401(k) plans and will likely need assistance making complicated decisions about how to spend their money throughout retirement. Other countries with defined contribution (DC) systems are also dealing with this spend-down challenge. To identify lessons for the U.S. from the experiences of other countries, GAO examined selected countries' approaches to offering retirement spend-down options; strategies to help participants make sound decisions; and approaches to regulating and overseeing options. This book discusses these options and strategies in detail, while also providing defined contribution plans and examining income replacement during retirement years in these defined contribution plans.
As life expectancy increases, the risk that retirees will outlive their assets is a growing challenge. The shift from defined benefit (DB) pension plans to defined contribution (DC) plans also increases the responsibility for workers and retirees to make difficult decisions and manage their pension and other financial assets so that they have income throughout retirement. This book explores financial experts recommendations and strategies to navigate the difficult choices retirees will have to make, and which often depend on an individual's circumstances, such as anticipated expenses, income level, health and each household's tolerance for risks, such as investment and longevity risk.
