Horses came to America from Spain, England, the Low Countries, and Arabia. Here they interbred and flourished as never before. "Out of the melting pot have come four entirely new breeds that rank among the finest horses of the world. Three of them originated through the painstaking and intelligent efforts of American horsemen, one through a freak of nature." That "freak" was a little bay stallion born when George Washington was president. This chunky, short-legged horse proved to be not only hardy and gentle but also able to outpull and outrun any other horse in New England or New York. Plagued by his owners' bad luck, the horse spent most of his twenty-eight years hauling freight but sired many offspring who also showed the strength, endurance, speed, heart, and peculiar conformation of the original Morgan horse. Based on extensive and careful research, this book tells the stories of the origins of the Morgan, the Standardbred, the American Saddle Horse, and the Tennessee Walking Horse as well as their progenitors--Figure, Messenger, Hamiltonian, Black Hawk, Dutchman, Lady Suffolk, Cockspur, Denmark, Tom Hal, Copperbottom, and Roan Allen--and the breeders and fanciers who recognized their special qualities.

all.
Joni Bentley's unique expertise is a direct result of being a qualified practitioner not only of the Alexander Technique but also of Classical dressage, stress management and functional medicine. It is a rare person who can combine all these areas in order to reveal a new and much needed holistic dimension in the training of horse and rider. In "Riding Success Without Stress", the author demonstrates with clarity and perception how incorrect habits and negativity can be eradicated at source and replaced with calmness, straightness and grace by the application of the Alexander Technique and the Classical school. This book demonstrates how the Alexander Technique training programme ensures that, by optimising the use of your own mind and body, you can optimise the use of your horse and ride to success completely without stress. This ground-breaking and revolutionary book provides invaluable and thought-provoking information for the benefit of all riders and their horses.

Backed with details on how she trains her own top-class horses and the problems she has overcome, she gives sound, practical advice on every aspect of working with youngsters. Jennie Loriston-Clarke was one of Britain's leading dressage riders and trainers and has competed in four Olympic Games. A protege of the legendary Vladimir S. Littauer and for more than thirty years director of the riding program at Sweet Briar College, Paul D. Cronin is a well-known and highly respected trainer and riding instructor. Schooling and Riding the Sport Horse is Cronin's clear and practical guide to getting the most out of your horse in a humane and sensitive way. Beginning with a brief history of educated horsemanship from the earliest published riding masters of the sixteenth century, Cronin clarifies the differences between forward riding and classical dressage, and how at times the two have become inappropriately mixed. He then gives an in-depth presentation of the American forward riding system that is the basis of hunter/jumper riding and examines the ways in which a rider's position and controls are essential to the training of the horse. In the system as Cronin explains it, the three basic pillars are position, controls, and schooling. In clear language, he walks the reader from the beginning stages of training through advanced jumping and cross-country work. He sets out proper methods of early schooling of the young, green, or reclaimed horse, based on freedom of movement under the weight of the rider at the walk, trot, canter, and jump; of gaining the horse's trust and cooperation; and of establishing agility and calmness in the horse at all gaits and over fences. Schooling and Riding the Sport Horse is an important book on horsemanship for riding instructors, trainers, and amateur riders alike.
While there are many excellent books that help the rider to address the technical goals of dressage, Ride from the Heart can transform the way in which the reader communicates with his horse. Rider and trainer Jenny Rolfe has written this book to share the experiences she gained in Portugal, a country with a long and spiritual history of classical training. For many years Jenny has been writing articles about classical horsemanship and her innovative techniques - particularly communication through breathing - which aim for ultimate lightness and empathy in riding have been met with much interest. Through techniques used in loose work, work in-hand and under saddle, the reader will be on the way to enhancing a sense of 'feel', which in turn will encourage oneness and a spirit of dance between horse and rider. The book underlines throughout, the importance of maintaining a bond of leadership, respect and friendship with our horse and within the pages are important tools for achieving these goals. Wherever you are within your level of training, this book will help to enhance and enrich your relationship with your horse so that art may be formed through love.
Not Quite a Horsewoman" has, since its publication in 1982, delighted thousands of aspirant riders and horse owners. Now in its third edition and embellished with even more delightful cartoons by Anne Pilgrim, it will entertain a new generation of horse lovers as Caroline Akrill reveals the frequent disasters and the occasional triumphs of her long association with a string of equine characters. Ambitions and aspirations fall by the wayside as she tells the story of her leading rein pony, the saga of her show hack and the tale of her season as a hunting columnist. She remembers her first stable yard where she was exploited by her own working pupils, her brief career as a dealer operating from a small village pub, and the agonies of professionally producing show ponies as their owners waited at the ring-side with their livery cheques still unwritten. Engagingly witty, endearingly frank, sometimes surprising, but always amusing, Caroline Akrill regards the horse from the safety of the stable door and scrutinises him with candour and affection.
Susanna Forrest grew up in the 1980s near Norwich and, like many a girl, she yearned for a pony. She never did get one of her own, but this didn't stop her becoming obsessed with all things equine. If Wishes Were Horses is the story of that all-consuming interest. As Susanna's journey unfolds, it leads her to horse-fixated princesses, recovering crack addicts, national heroines and runaways across the ages. From girl-riders of the Bronze Age, to lavishly adorned equestrian Victorians and twenty-first-century children on horseback in Brixton, she explores the development of this Pony Cult from its earliest times to the present day. In doing so, she takes to the saddle once more and rediscovers her own riding legs in this frank, eclectic and captivating memoir of an ever-changing equine world.
Not only does the Appaloosa encapsulate colour and beauty, but also it is a truly versatile breed blessed with a willing nature. Anyone who has been lucky enough to own or ride an Appaloosa will agree that there is no other breed that matches its quality or kind nature while still having the ability to display bravery and athleticism. Known for the variety of coat patterns (e.g. blanket, leopard, and snowflake) which set it apart from other equines, the Appaloosa has three additional identifiable characteristics: mottled skin, white sclera to the eye, and striped hooves. The Appaloosa's history has been scarred with war and near extinction, yet the breed is as strong today as it was when running free on the planes of America's Palouse country in the 1700s. With the help and support of the Appaloosa Horse Club, the Appaloosa is becoming recognised and appreciated as a multi -talented athlete worldwide.

Codependency, a compulsive behavior sometimes known as "relationship addiction," is often characterized by a dysfunctional, one-sided relationship that is emotionally destructive--even abusive. For years Susan Conley found herself trapped, married to an addict whose health, welfare, and safety she valued far above her own. Over time she watched as she lost contact with her own needs, desires, and sense of self. But then at forty-two, after yet another crisis came to an anticlimactic resolution that left nothing healed and little to hope for, she decided, having never so much as touched a horse, to take up riding. Here, with humor and honesty, Conley chronicles her experiences, sharing how her pledge to rediscover herself following her divorce was aided, abetted, and challenged by the horses in her life. "They were as large a part of my recovery as were any of the self-help books I read, personal development workshops I did, and 12-step meetings I attended," she writes. "The struggle to heal the wounds of a dysfunctional marriage was actually made easier via the real wounds received from horseback riding." Many Brave Fools explores the ways in which horses enriched Conley's life, and how the process of making herself into a rider also helped her become the person she most wanted to be: not the "ex-wife of an addict," but a responsive, confident, even courageous woman, entering the prime of her life. |
