James William Martin
R1,526 Discovery Miles 15 260 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Historically, the integration of manufacturing methodologies into the office environment has proven to be problematic. Part of the difficulty lies in the fact that process workflows tend to be globally dispersed and thus rely heavily on information technology. But in complex service systems that contain a mix of employees, consultants, and technology, standardized protocols have been shown to reduce cycle time and transactional cost as well as improve quality. The successful application of Lean methodologies to improve process workflows is an efficient way to simplify operations and prevent mistakes. In Lean Six Sigma for the Office , Six Sigma guru James Martin presents proven modifications that can be deployed in offices, particularly those offices involved with global operations. Making use of Kaizen and Six Sigma concepts, along with Lean manufacturing principles, this book instructs managers on how they can improve operational efficiency and increase customer satisfaction. The author brings experience gleaned from his application of these methodologies in a myriad of industries to create a practical and hands-on reference for the office environment. Using a detailed sequence of activities, including over 140 figures and tables as well as checklists and evaluation tools, he demonstrates how to realize the rapid improvement of office operations, and how to eliminate unnecessary tasks through value stream mapping (VSM). The book also emphasizes the importance of strategic alignment of Kaizen events and the impact of organizational culture on process improvement activities. Latter chapters in the book discuss key elements of a change model in the context of transitional improvements as they relate to the process owner and local work team. By applying the proven principles found in this book, effective and sustainable organizational change can be accomplished, efficiency can be improved, and mistakes can be eliminated. This 2nd edition provides insight into the new tools and methods Lean Six Sigma process improvement professionals need to improve customer experience and increase productivity within high transaction processes across complex information technology ecosystems. It is one-stop self-contained reference for the application of Lean Six Sigma methods enhanced by powerful approaches for process improvement in highly complex service processes. Several new leading-edge topics are integrated into this new edition, such as: * The "voice of" customers, suppliers, employees and partners * Design Thinking Alignment * Ecosystems in Information Technology * Metadata Definition and Lineage * Information Quality Governance * Big Data Collection and Analytics * Mapping High Volume Transactions through Systems * Robotic Process Automation Applications * Automating for Solution Sustainability * Governing Organizations * Data Privacy (General Data Protection Regulation)

Tourism Demand Modelling and Forecasting - Modern Econometric Approaches (Hardcover): Haiyan Song, S. F. Witt Tourism Demand Modelling and Forecasting - Modern Econometric Approaches (Hardcover)
Haiyan Song, S. F. Witt
R3,881 Discovery Miles 38 810 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The phenomenal growth of both the world-wide tourism industry and academic interest in tourism over the last thirty years has generated great interest in tourism demand modelling and forecasting from both sectors. However, the tendency for researchers and practitioners engaged in quantitative causal tourism modelling and forecasting to run many regression equations and try to choose the 'best' model based on various parametric and non-parametric criteria has been widely criticised as failing to provide credible results. The aim of this book is to present the recent advances in econometric modelling methodology within the context of tourism demand analysis at a level that is accessible to non-specialists, and to illustrate these new developments with actual tourism applications.
The book begins with an introduction to the fundamentals of tourism demand analysis, before addressing the problems of traditional tourism demand modelling and forecasting, i.e. data mining and spurious regression due to common trends in the time series. Three chapters explore the general-to-specific approach to tourism demand modelling and forecasting, including the use of autoregressive distributed lag processes, cointegration analysis and error correction models. The time varying parameter model together with the use of the Kalman filter as an estimation method is a useful tool for examining the effects of regime shifts on tourism demand elasticities: this is explored next. The panel data approach is introduced as a way of overcoming the problem of estimation and forecasting biases caused by insufficient time series data. The book concludes by evaluating the empirical forecasting performance of the variousmodels and putting forward some general conclusions.

Disequilibrium Sports Economics - Competitive Imbalance and Budget Constraints (Hardcover): Wladimir Andreff Disequilibrium Sports Economics - Competitive Imbalance and Budget Constraints (Hardcover)
Wladimir Andreff
R3,155 Discovery Miles 31 550 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Andreff and his contributors bring a strong dose of reality to the economic modelling of sports leagues. Disequilibrium Sports Economics provides an intellectually compelling opening and a theoretically necessary antidote to the study of sports economics.' - Andrew Zimbalist, Smith College, US'This is an interesting book worth reading for every sports economist because it introduces a thought provoking approach to the growing field of sports economics. The authors show how disequilibrium economics may improve our understanding of puzzling economic phenomena in sports. I congratulate the editor and the contributors for this new book and the novel perspectives provided therein!' - Helmut M. Dietl, University of Zurich, Switzerland 'I felt great intellectual excitement after getting acquainted with this volume. The high quality papers by Wladimir Andreff and his co-authors are more significant than the topic indicated modestly by the title; they may not only urge economists of sport to reconsider their earlier theories, but may also provide inspiration and a new momentum to the wide research program on disequilibrium and the soft budget constraint.' - Janos Kornai, Harvard University, US and Corvinus University of Budapest, Hungary 'This book sounds like a theoretical breakthrough towards a new approach in sports economics that generates important insights into the issue of financial fair play in football.' - Andrea Traverso, Head of Club Licensing and Financial Fair Play, UEFA 'This path-breaking volume contains novel analysis of problems of critical importance to sports clubs, leagues, fans and academics interested in sports.' - Robert Simmons, Lancaster University Management School, UK For decades, sports economics has been set within the framework of equilibrium economics, in particular when modelling team sport leagues. Based on a conviction that this does not reflect real life, this book addresses a gap in the literature and opens up a new research area by applying concepts drawn from disequilibrium economics. It is divided into two parts, the first of which focuses on economic disequilibrium in sports markets and competitive imbalance in sporting contests. The second part concentrates on soft budget constraints and their consequences for club governance and management. This pioneering book is the first to tackle non-mainstream economics in sport and offers a first approach to disequilibrium sports economics. Providing a new metric of competitive balance and opening up new avenues of future research, this is essential reading for economists and those researching sport across many disciplines. Visitor Management - Case Studies from World Heritage Sites (Paperback, New edition): Myra Shackley Visitor Management - Case Studies from World Heritage Sites (Paperback, New edition)
Myra Shackley
R1,444 Discovery Miles 14 440 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

'Visitor Management' is an innovative collection of case studies taken from cultural World Heritage Sites. Using examples from the world's most significant archaeological and architectural legacies this book identifies the problems involved with site management.
Cultural World Heritage Sites are extremely attractive to contemporary visitors. This poses many problems for site management, notably the need to preserve a delicate balance between interpretation, conservation and the provision of visitor facilities.
This contributed title takes examples from a range of UNESCO World Heritage Sites and shows models of good practice looking at the functions of the different organizations involved and the range of variation among sites. The contributors have international expertise and draw on first-hand knowledge at a practical level.
'Visitor Management: Case studies from World Heritage Sites' is ideal for practitioners and students involved in heritage management and conservation management. Undergraduate and postgraduate students in tourism, leisure and hospitality will also find this book an invaluable read.
Myra Shackley is Professor of Culture Resource Management and Head of the Centre for Tourism and Visitor Management at Nottingham Trent University. Her research interests lie in the management of cultural and wildlife tourism, particularly in relation to Protected Areas and World Heritage Sites. She has published eleven previous books, of which the last was 'Wildlife Tourism' (International Thompson Business Press, 1996) and has extensive research and consultancy interests within the field of visitor management.

Unravelling the Rag Trade - Immigrant Entrepreneurship in Seven World Cities (Hardcover): Jan Rath Unravelling the Rag Trade - Immigrant Entrepreneurship in Seven World Cities (Hardcover)
Jan Rath
R3,942 Discovery Miles 39 420 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The garment industry is one of the world's largest industries, yet there are few sustained examinations of its importance to the global economy and the very vital role that immigrant entrepreneurship has played. Focusing on the garment industry in seven world cities Paris, London, Birmingham, Amsterdam, New York, Miami and Los Angeles this book tackles the complex relationship between the development of immigrant entrepreneurship and the shift to global, post-industrial urban economies. The interconnections among immigrant entrepreneurs, social networks, market conditions and regulatory matters are thoroughly explored in a comparative way. Starting from the idea that general social, economic and political processes manifest themselves in ever changing, historically specific shapes, the contributors offer intriguing insights into the dynamics of entrepreneurial management against the backdrop of such processes as: the differential spatial impact of economic restructuring; the significance of governance at various levels; and the conditional use of social capital. With contributions from leading experts in the field, this is a must for those wishing to supplement their knowledge in globalization, labour, economics, immigration and the garment industry broadly speaking.

C Ryan, S. Page
R2,728 R2,297 Discovery Miles 22 970 Save R431 (16%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book is an edited selection of key research papers published in the field of tourism management during the past ten years. It seeks to take stock of some of the seminal developments in the literature and to examine the evolution of thinking and the development of the subject area, particularly in the emergence of research sub-areas.
The book is organized into a series of parts which reflect the development of new and established areas of research: decision-making and tourist behaviour, tourism demand forecasting, gender and sex in tourism, planning and communities, urban tourism, theme parks, sustainable tourism or eco-tourism, marketing and service quality, and tourism as it affects indigenous peoples. Each part is introduced by commentary that relates the articles to the wider literature and the current progress of knowledge in each area. Underlying the books is a view that only through a continuing dialogue between specific tourism journal articles and a wider social science literature can one consider the 'cutting edge' nature of tourism research and manner in which it is then developed and disseminated. This book is one way of allowing readers to assess the merits of each article and its wider contribution to the tourism literature.
