Railway Memories No.28 Tyneside and the Tyne Valley (Paperback): Stephen Chapman Railway Memories No.28 Tyneside and the Tyne Valley (Paperback)
Stephen Chapman; Edited by Stephen Chapman
R578 Discovery Miles 5 780 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Railway Memories No.28 features a whole range of memorable scenes from the famous expresses of the East Coast main line to the humble, dirty coal trains that ground their way unceasingly around the local network, from the world's oldest railway only a few years from its 300th birthday to Tyneside's pioneering electric commuter services, from the great bridges and magnificent stations to engine sheds and wayside halts. Besides the main line railways, the area's second rail network, just as extensive but less well known is also featured - that of the National Coal Board, descended from the earliest wagonways, which bound the pits to each other and to riverside staiths and the main line system until becoming extinct in the late 1980s. Railway Memories No.28 opens with informative text which tells the story of Tyneside's rail systems from the world's earliest forms of rail transport in the 1600s to the Metro and electrification of the East Coast main line in the 1980s. Locations featured include: Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Whitley Bay, Tynemouth, Ponteland, Gateshead, Jarrow, South Shields, Dunston-on-Tyne, the Tanfield branch, Blaydon, Wylam, Hexham, Allendale, Haltwhistle, Alston.

This significant new book provides a single reference work to all the departmental locomotives - steam, diesel, electric and battery - both standard and narrow gauge operated by BR from 1948 to the end of steam in 1968. Although the railways employed the vast bulk of their locomotive stock on commercial passenger and freight traffic, many also employed a number for departmental duties. These may have been narrow gauge, for example, for use in the major workshops such as Crewe and Horwich or withdrawn ex-main-line locomotives that eked out their final day or months in a secondary duty at a locomotive shed. At Nationalisation in 1948 BR inherited a number of these departmental locomotives from the 'Big Four' companies and, over the next 20 years, a number of further steam and other locomotives were transferred to departmental duties, including a significant number used as stationary boilers. The transfer of locomotives from capital to departmental stock did not cease with the end of steam and examples of diesel and electric locomotives being renumbered into the departmental series continued effectively until the end of BR in the early 1990s. The book includes information about the locations at which the locomotives worked and provides full details of each individual locomotive's record in departmental service. The book is illustrated throughout with Ordnance Survey maps and photographs of the locomotives and locations.

R457 Discovery Miles 4 570 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book details 24 walks into the hills surrounding the historic and iconic Settle to Carlisle railway, based on the stations between Settle and Appleby. The area has some of the finest walking of the north Pennines: the Craven district around Settle; the Three Peaks area; Dentdale, and Mallerstang and the upper Eden valley. The walks, which vary from 4.7 to 17.4 miles with suggestions for variations, are graded, and the descriptions come with OS map extracts and points of interest. Guided walks take place most weekends of the year from these stations, as charter rail services for ramblers popularised the activity from the mid 1970's, but this book allows confident walkers to go it alone if they so wish, not necessarily along the same routes.

Last year Noodle Books produced the first volume of photographs from the E Wallis collection, which received widespread praise. Due to this success a new collection of photographs is being selected which is sure to be widely welcomed by Southern enthusiasts. E Wallis was a signal engineer on the LBSCR and SR from 1922 to 1934 and was in a privileged position to record the contemporary infrastructure scene on the railway. As a result very few trains feature in the pictures, but instead there are images from vantage points not normally accessible to the average enthusiast. All the photographs are of excellent quality and it is rare these days to find such a rare collection that has never been seen and have the opportunity of bring them to a wider audience.

Railways and Recollections - 1972 (Paperback): Chris Harris Railways and Recollections - 1972 (Paperback)
Chris Harris
R182 Discovery Miles 1 820 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The aim of this series is to appeal to readers of all ages, perhaps for different reasons...In this volume: We travel back to the year 1969 For the younger reader there are wonderful pictures of trains, real trains. There will, for example, be tank engines, steam engines, electric trains and multiple units and many more varieties besides! Some will be recognised from train sets, model railways and books, while others will be seen for the first time. For the older reader the books are designed to build into a collection placing the railway in the context of key events thus providing an historical perspective of travel in times past. For those old enough to remember the years depicted, the series will, we hope, provide reminders for many of school days, time perhaps spent train-spotting, shed bashing and generally gricing! The books also make ideal theme gifts for the year of birth, marriage, retirement, starting work and other such events in life.

The name of Tony Atkins should need little introduction to followers of the Great Western Railway. One of the original contributors to the books on Great Western Wagons and more recently on Great Western Goods Services, his expertise in this particular field of history, operation and commerce is probably without equal. Now he turns his attention to the Docks services operated by the Company and while shipping cannot be totally ignored, this is a book which concentrates primarily on the docks - how they operated, and the traffic that each of them handled, both goods and passenger. Neither were the Great Western docks limited to just South Wales, instead the book starts at Brentford, moves to Weymouth, then travels around the coast to Kingswear, Totnes and Plymouth before continuing through Bristol, Gloucester and finally into South Wales.

Tom Zoellner
R561 Discovery Miles 5 610 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

An epic and revelatory narrative of the most important transportation technology of the modern world
In his wide-ranging and entertaining new book, Tom Zoellner--coauthor of the "New York Times"-bestselling "An Ordinary Man"--travels the globe to tell the story of the sociological and economic impact of the railway technology that transformed the world--and could very well change it again. From the frigid trans-Siberian railroad to the antiquated Indian Railways to the Japanese-style bullet trains, Zoellner offers a stirring story of this most indispensable form of travel. A masterful narrative history, "Train" also explores the sleek elegance of railroads and their hypnotizing rhythms, and explains how locomotives became living symbols of sex, death, power, and romance.

The line from Settle to Carlisle is one of the world's great rail journeys. It carves its way through the magnificent landscape of the Yorkshire Dales - where it becomes the highest main line in England - descending to Cumbria's lush green Eden Valley with its view of the Pennines and Lakeland fells. But the story of the line is even more enthralling. From its earliest history the line fostered controversy: it probably should never have been built, arising from a political dispute between two of the largest and most powerful railway companies in the 1860s. Its construction, through some of the most wild and inhospitable terrain in England, was a Herculean task. Tragic accidents affected those who built, worked and travelled the line. After surviving the Beeching cuts of the 1960s, the line faced almost certain closure in the 1980s, only to be saved by an unexpected last-minute reprieve. This book describes the history behind the inception and creation of the line; the challenges of constructing the 72-mile railway and its seventeen viaducts and fourteen tunnels; threat of closure in the mid-1980s and the campaign to save it, and finally, the line today and its future.

A hundred years ago Britain stood on the brink of a world war that was to take the country to the limits of its capabilities. For this war the railways were fundamental to the war effort at home. The Great Western Railway played a significant role in maintaining the flow of people and goods, including military personnel and equipment. Although the railways were taken under government control during World War 1 the Great Western Railway largely maintained its own character which continued when the railways were grouped under the control of the Big Four companies in 1923. Two decades later the country was at war again and the GWR was called on once more to help the war effort. The difference this time was that the railways were directly targetted by the enemy as their aircraft reached far into Britain. At the end of the war the railways were facing financial ruin and were shortly afterwards nationalised. The STEAM Museum of the Great Western Railway at Swindon has built up an unparalleled archive of photographs of the history of the GWR. Accompanying the informative text about the impact of the two world wars on the GWR, photographs from the archive bring to life the remarkable effort the railways put into ultimate victory as well as showing graphically the very considerable difficulties that the railway had to endure not to mention the cost to life and limb.

As many passengers travel daily on London Underground as the rest of the British railway network in its entirety and passengers will be familiar with the differences between the Underground lines. What perhaps is less obvious to the travelling public is the difference between the sub-surface stock and the much smaller deep-level tube stock which is constrained by the size of the tunnels. Even within these two main types of stock there are differences between individual lines, depending on density of traffic in central London or the suburbs, special demands of servicing Heathrow airport (the Piccadilly Line) and even differing lengths of platforms. Stock on the Underground generally has a long life - the earliest stock is the 'A' stock from the early 1960s still to be seen on the Metropolitan and East London Lines and the earliest tube stock still in operation dates from the opening of the Victoria Line 1967. The most recent is the 1995 Northern Line stock and the 1996 Jubilee Line stock. The introduction to the book gives a historical description of each of the six main types of sub-surface stock and three types of deep level tube stock in operation on the Underground today and is accompanied by detailed specifications of each type of stock and photographs. The book then provides a complete listing of the stock numbers of each vehicle operating on the Underground lines as well as battery locomotives and maintenance vehicles, with the listing grouped under the individual Underground lines, again accompanied by photographs.

BR Diesel Locomotives in Preservation (Hardcover): Fred Kerr BR Diesel Locomotives in Preservation (Hardcover)

When British Railways (BR) initiated its Modernisation Plan in 1954 it had little experience of diesel locomotives thus initiated a Pilot Scheme to trial combinations of the three elements comprised within a locomotive the engine, transmission and body. The initial orders for 174 locomotives were placed in November 1955, but even before the first locomotive had been delivered, changes in Government policy led to bulk orders for most designs being trialled. It was only in 1968, once steam traction had been removed from the network, that BR was able to review the success, or otherwise, of its diesel fleet and decide which designs to withdraw from service. The nascent preservation movement of the time was concerned to preserve steam locomotives whilst only buying diesel shunting locomotives for support roles on heritage lines and it wasn t until 1977 that any effort was made to preserve main line diesels. Once it was confirmed that diesel locomotives had an appeal to enthusiasts, further purchases were made that resulted in examples of most of the BR diesel classes being represented within the preservation movement. Fred Kerr s book details those classes which are represented on heritage lines, identifies where possible their location as of December 2016, shows many of them at work and shows what is involved in the restoration, maintenance and operation of diesel locomotives by the volunteers whose efforts are vital but rarely acknowledged. Some of the preserved locomotives were bought for possible use on the national network and this was facilitated by the Railways Bill 1993\. A complementary album of preserved and heritage locomotives titled _Heritage Traction on the Main Line_ details the locomotive classes whose representatives are still in regular use on the national network as at December 2016 and follows a similar format to this album.

Jeffery Grayer, author of many of the Impermanent Way titles, has once again sourced a lively and unusual selection of images to illustrate the wide variety of lines that once existed in Dorset but have now long been closed. Contrasting with the views of closure are a carefully chosen selection of colour scenes showing the featured lines as they were in operation. The vast majority of the photographs in the book have never been seen before. Locations such as Bournemouth West, Corfe Castle, Swanage and Bridport/West Bay feature strongly as does Lyme Regis and the changes that have occurred around Weymouth.

The County Donegal Railways (Paperback): E.M. Patterson, Steve Flanders, Joe Begley The County Donegal Railways (Paperback)
E.M. Patterson, Steve Flanders, Joe Begley
R600 Discovery Miles 6 000 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

This is a new edition of Dr EM Patterson's first volume on the history of the narrow-gauge railways of North-West Ireland, originally published in 1962. The County Donegal Railways had a route of 124 miles, five termini and three junction stations. For the most part they traversed hilly and thinly-populated country and for two generations they were a busy and efficient operation. This edition adds a valuable chapter of interviews and memories of some of the surviving workers and others who had contact with the railway. It also includes a chapter on the County Donegal Railway today (as over 50 years after closure, much can still be seen of the former network), and some additional Glover drawings of locomotive, carriage and wagon stock.

In the seven decades since the darkest moments of the Second World War it seems every tenebrous corner of the conflict has been laid bare, prodded and examined from every perspective of military and social history. But there is a story that has hitherto been largely overlooked. It is a tale of quiet heroism, a story of ordinary people who fought, with enormous self-sacrifice, not with tanks and guns, but with elbow grease and determination. It is the story of the British railways and, above all, the extraordinary men and women who kept them running from 1939 to 1945. Churchill himself certainly did not underestimate their importance to the wartime story when, in 1943, he praised 'the unwavering courage and constant resourcefulness of railwaymen of all ranks in contributing so largely towards the final victory.' And what a story it is. The railway system during the Second World War was the lifeline of the nation, replacing vulnerable road transport and merchant shipping. The railways mobilised troops, transported munitions, evacuated children from cities and kept vital food supplies moving where other forms of transport failed. Railwaymen and women performed outstanding acts of heroism. Nearly 400 workers were killed at their posts and another 2,400 injured in the line of duty. Another 3,500 railwaymen and women died in action. The trains themselves played just as vital a role. The famous Flying Scotsman train delivered its passengers to safety after being pounded by German bombers and strafed with gunfire from the air. There were astonishing feats of engineering restoring tracks within hours and bridges and viaducts within days. Trains transported millions to and from work each day and sheltered them on underground platforms at night, a refuge from the bombs above. Without the railways, there would have been no Dunkirk evacuation and no D-Day. Michael Williams, author of the celebrated book On the Slow Train, has written an important and timely book using original research and over a hundred new personal interviews. This is their story.
