The 20 walks in this pocket book are centred on a broad variety of
good, and in some cases award-winning, pubs. The circular walks
vary in length from 3 to 5.5 miles and take you through some of the
best countryside in England. The routes include historic market
towns such as Nayland, which appears in the Doomsday Book, the sand
dunes and sea views of Walberswick, Willy Lotts Cottage made famous
by the painting The Hay Wain by John Constable and the stunning
meadows, woods and farmland around Constable Country.
Sweden's most famous long-distance trail, the Kungsleden (King's
Trail) traverses the land of the Sami people and the midnight sun,
stretching 460km between Abisko and Hemavan. Around half the route
lies within the Arctic Circle showcasing an ever-changing landscape
of snowy mountains, deep glacial valleys, open fell, expansive
lakes and verdant forest. The fully waymarked trail is comprised of
five continuous and distinct sections: these can be walked
individually or a thru-hike will take around a month. The guide
also includes the popular Abisko to Nikkaluokta circuit, which can
be completed in a week, and an ascent of Kebnekaise, Sweden's
highest peak at 2098m. In addition to clear route description and
mapping, you'll find a wealth of practical advice covering
accommodation and facilities, equipment and resupply and detailed
notes on how to get to and from the section start and
finish-points. A Swedish and Fell Sami glossary can be found in the
appendix. Although there are plentiful opportunities for wild
camping, three of the five trail sections are equipped with huts
(many including a shop and a sauna) making them easily accessible
to all. The remaining two sections have a more remote feel that
will appeal to those intent on finding some solitude. To add
further colour, there are seven mandatory lake crossings on the
trail with the option of rowing or using the motorised service:
full details are provided in the text. The Kungsleden passes
through five national parks, including Sarek. Other highlights
include the striking Tjaktjavagge glacial valley and the famous hay
meadows of Aktse, perfectly framed by the azure Lajtavrre delta and
the sheer chiselled face of Skierrffe. The Kungsleden invites you
to step into a new world, and it may well prove to be the start of
a long and rich association involving many repeated visits.
20 walks ranging from 2 to 6 miles in length, all within the
capabilities of most people, varying in difficulty and the nature
of the terrain. The scenery is varied and magnificent and the walks
vary from easy and flat riverside strolls to more challenging walks
in the Snowdonia National Park or on the slopes of the Clwydian
hills.
The GR1 (Sendero Historico) is a long traverse of northern Spain
from west to east over 1250km of remote country and mountain
walking. The waymarked route runs through the Pyrenean foothills
from Puerto de Tarna at the western end to near L'Escala on the
Mediterranean coast. Arguably one of Spain's best long-distance
paths, it follows gently graded paths, making a long but easy walk
suitable for a reasonably fit walker. The complete trail requires
around 53 days to complete end to end, but the guidebook splits the
route into 7 sections, each with a start or endpoint that can be
easily reached by train or bus, allowing walkers to explore the
route in manageable chunks. The guidebook also describes how to
extend the route to Finisterre and the Atlantic using GR routes.
Providing all the information you will need, the guide combines
practical information about planning your own itinerary, when to
go, cuisine and terrain with general information about the varied
geology and history of the area. Route description is accompanied
by contoured mapping and stage and section summary information, as
well as detailed information about any accommodation available en
route.

La Gomera is the ultimate get-away-from-it-all island: easy-going,
unspoilt, friendly, isolated from the hustle and bustle of modern
living, and so laid back it's virtually supine - even the volcanoes
have been dormant for millions of years. The walks, however, are a
bit more energetic. For the new 4th edition of Walk! La Gomera
Charles Davis has teamed up with Jan Kostura. Jan brings his wide
experience and passion for the Canaries, checking, re-walking and
revising existing routes, and adding a couple of his own
adventures, including a new Top Three Gomeran walk. Two routes have
been dropped as having become too dangerous, but the good news is
that many of the more harum-scarum walks have been improved through
path clearing and the addition of railings to the vertiginous
stretches. Other good news is that the devastating forest fires of
2012 have proved not nearly as damaging as we feared, leaving most
of our itineraries unscathed. In short, there is every reason to
take off and explore La Gomera, or to return with this new edition
to revive acquaintances and make some new discoveries at the same
time. All the trails have been surveyed and mapped using GPS
satellite navigation. The authors and their co-walkers have walked
all these routes, ensuring accuracy and up to date information for
hikers. Clear descriptions guide the walker both to the starting
point and throughout the routes, with gradings, distances, timings
and altitudes all symbolized, as are vertigo alerts and refreshment
possibilities on or at ends of the routes. There are 34 detailed
walking adventures with routes ranging from a couple of 90 minute 4
kilometre walks, up to challenging trails taking over 6 hours,
covering 20 kilometres including ascents & descents of 1060
metres. Each route includes its own map sections with the route and
waypoints clearly marked. Map sections are developed from the La
Gomera Tour & Trail Super-Durable Map, the most up to date and
toughest map of the island. GPS waypoint files for all the 34
routes are available in three formats as a free zip file download
from the Discovery Walking Guides website.

The three Dumfriesshire dales of Nithsdale, Annandale and Eskdale
are a rural playground of heatherclad hills, linns with tumbling
waterfalls, babbling rivers and evershifting merse and firth.
Despite being bisected by the main road into England, these dales
were known more intimately by the discerning Victorians than they
are today. Time, then, to rediscover the charms of this peaceful
corner of Scotland. Whether it's a morning exploring the country's
highest village, an afternoon paddling the shores of the Solway or
an evening gazing at star-filled skies, Darren Flint and Donald
Greig;'s hand-picked selection of 40 walks reveals what it is that
makes this unassuming part of of the world so special.
This guidebook provides clear, easy to follow route directions for
the 60 and a half mile-long Richmond Way, passing through a unique
area of Northern England. This is a linear walk starting from the
main gate of Lancaster Castle and ending below the great keep of
Richmond Castle in North Yorkshire. The walk encompasses sections
of the Lower Lune Valley, the limestone country around Ingleborough
and Whernside, the moorlands and fells of the central Pennines and
the central and northern valleys of the Yorkshire Dales National
Park. The Richmond Way does not exist in a formal sense; it does
not have the status of an officially recognised trail and the
walker will not find any reference to it on any waymarkers or
signposts. Nevertheless, the route, devised and tested by the
author over a number of years is along public rights of way that in
the main are well waymarked. The route is almost entirely along
field, woodland and riverside paths, ancient tracks and quiet
country lanes. A strong walker could complete the walk within two
days, though more realistically an average walker even if
accompanied by children should be able to complete the walk inside
five days. The book includes 58 maps and 167 colour photographs,
information on local public transport, accommodation and
facilities, and features historical, archaeological and
geographical information along the route.
