John Ford directs this US Western starring James Stewart as a marshal of a small town in the 1880s. While there he is falsely identified by the locals as wanted murderer Travers (Jan Merlin) and, despite knowing the truth, US Marshal Harry Deckett (Stephen McNally) decides to punish Clay for Travers' crimes in order to advance his career. Clay is forced to go on the run, taking with him a hostage, Janet Gifford (Felicia Farr), who ends up helping him in his attempt to clear his name.

When railroad surveyor Clay O'Mara (Murphy) hears about the murder of his father and brother he returns home to seek out those responsible. Encouraged by Tom, Fred makes Clay his deputy, and while he plans to use his new status for the benefit of his investigation, the killers instead send him after gunslinger Whitey Kinkaid (Duryea), hoping he will take Clay down. However, Clay deals with Kinkaid and sets out to capture the real culprits.

He gets involved in the feud between two opposing bandit gangs, one led by Major Jackson (Eduardo Fajardo), the other by Hugo Rodriguez (José Bódalo). Holding Jackson responsible for the death of his wife, Django seeks revenge by teaming up with Rodriguez in a plan to steal the major's gold. But when Rodriguez becomes unwilling to cooperate the situation gets out of hand leaving Django to rely on his sharpshooting to make it out alive.
