Little do they know that Mitch is far from pacified by this and is intent on using his new role to punish each and every member of the town for the lack of charity they showed his wife...

When railroad surveyor Clay O'Mara (Murphy) hears about the murder of his father and brother he returns home to seek out those responsible. Encouraged by Tom, Fred makes Clay his deputy, and while he plans to use his new status for the benefit of his investigation, the killers instead send him after gunslinger Whitey Kinkaid (Duryea), hoping he will take Clay down. However, Clay deals with Kinkaid and sets out to capture the real culprits.

When Rio is released five years later, he goes out to seek revenge; however, he is surprised to find his partner is married with a stepdaughter and sheriff of a town. Complications set in when Rio himself falls in love with the stepdaughter.
Jack Crabb (Dustin Hoffman), who claims to be 121 years old, recounts his life's adventures. These include being orphaned and raised by Native Americans, returned to his own people as a con-man, and finally emerging as the only white man to survive the Battle of Little Big Horn. Crabb's experiences present a unique view of American history in this cult Western, which also stars Faye Dunaway and Richard Mulligan.
