An easy description of this alien invasion movie would be
Black Hawk Down -meets-
War Of The Worlds. That should in essence tell you that this movie focuses not on the whole invasion, but rather on a small group of characters who find themselves involved in only a small part of the raging battle. The characters happen to be a platoon unit of U.S. Marines trying to rescue some civilians and get them to an extraction point. A simple story yes, but it's certainly a thrillingly gripping adventure.
The director keeps the action fast and choppy and you feel you're right in the middle of it, although the shaky cam effect can get a bit disorienting for some. Also, the movie might be 113 minutes long, but from the 20th minute onwards its almost non-stop action. And it even manages to be surprisingly tense in some quiet scenes when you just know that something bad's about to happen.
The actors and characters are your typical "army cardboard cliches" but the movie is still very enjoyable, and some zippy special effects and constant barrage of whizzing bullets and explosions is bound to keep you riveted to the screen. The sound DOES get extremely loud though, and the sense of being in the middle of a "war" might cause loss of hearing to some. And this affects the dialogue sometimes, since it's hard to make out what some of the characters are saying when a freeway is being blown to "smithereens".
I'd still however call it a terrifically-entertaining invasion film. One that finally takes itself seriously and not along the lines of the Michael Bay/Roland Emmerich school of cheesy action movies. (4 out of 5, by Carlisle Johnson)
Witness the end of civilization unfold as hostile alien invaders attack the planet.
As people everywhere watch the world’s great cities fall, Los Angeles becomes the last stand for mankind in a battle no one expected.
Now it's up to a Marine staff sergeant and his platoon to draw a line in the sand as they take on an enemy unlike any they’ve ever encountered in this epic sci-fi action film.

This is one of the worst movies I had to "battle" through, not worth your time and money!

Highly entertaining and gripping, for those of you who enjoy suspending belief for a couple hours, you will lose yourself in the force of the story and powerful music score by Brian Tyler.
