This irreverently off-the-wall superhero satire turned out to exceed my expectation in every way. I was expecting something corny and silly which wouldn't take itself too seriously. But Kick Ass manages the near-impossible: it features some very funny scenes, yet also manages to include extremely tense and shocking violence, as well as a truly villainous bad guy.

Dave Lizewski is a geeky teen who claims that his only superpower is invisibility to girls. He is an avid comic book fan, and he ponders why there are no real superheroes out there. He decides to try crime-fighting out, (in full costume), and almost loses his life. This doesn't stop him though, and his second attempt is much more successful, and this leads to him becoming "Kick Ass" - an internet phenomenon when his antics are caught on camera. He becomes involved with a father-daughter crimefighting duo, and together they focus their attention on mob boss Frank D'Amico.

A simple plotline, but the tangents in which the movie springs from that point on are unexpected and astounding. Add to that some stellar action scenes, and an extremely entertaining foul-mouthed performance from 11-year-old Chloe Moretz as the deadly "Hit Girl", and you have a totally original superhero recipe, albeit one that won't appeal to all tastes. And surprisingly, for the first time in ages, Nicolas Cage actually gives a decent performance. A truly "Kick Ass" movie! (5 out of 5, by Carlisle Johnson)

“How come nobody’s ever tried to be a superhero?” When Dave Lizewski – ordinary New York teenager and rabid comic-book geek dons a green-and-yellow internet-bought wetsuit to become the no-nonsense vigilante, Kick-Ass, he soon finds an answer to his own question: because it hurts.

But, overcoming all the odds, the eager yet inexperienced Dave quickly becomes a phenomenon, capturing the imagination of the public. However, he’s not the only superhero out there – the fearless and highly-trained father-daughter crime-fighting duo, Big Daddy and Hit Girl have been slowly but surely taking down the criminal empire of local Mafioso, Frank D’Amico.

And, as Kick-Ass gets drawn into their no-holds-barred world of bullets and bloodletting with Frank’s son, Chris, now reborn as Kick-Ass’s arch-nemesis, Red Mist - the stage is set for a final showdown between the forces of good and evil - in which the DIY hero will have to live up to his name. Or die trying…

KICK-ASS

Fri, 25 Jul 2014 | Review by: Micky B

Co-produced by Brad Pitt, this violent comedy romp is the real-life version of yet another Marvel comic-strip character. In fact, the film was made in parallel with the comic-book's development, and was actually released before the comic-book ever hit the magazine stands. The lead character is David Lizewski (Aaron Taylor-Johnson;) an ordinary teenager, who sets his sights on becoming a real-life superhero! Calling himself “Kick-Ass,” he buys a body-suit (which he modifies,) and sets off on his crime-fighting quest. On his first superhero outing, he is stabbed and becomes the victim of a hit-and-run driver. Does he quit? Not likely. But he then meets his match in a former cop, known only as “Big Daddy” (Nicholas Cage) – who is on a quest of his own! Its interesting to see that Cage gets only fifth billing...but he really makes the most of his character. Also in the cast is Xander Berkeley, whom you might recall as the dishonest presidential bodyguard in “Air Force One” of a few years back. Here, he plays the part of a detective – Victor “Viv” Giganti. Although based on comic-book structure, the graphic action and horrendously bad language hardly makes it suitable for the age-group for whom comic books – in general – are aimed. The movie, however, has been such a success in America, that “Kick-Ass 2” has already been made and released; with “Kick-Ass 3” currently in the pipeline..
