Grown Ups (DVD)

Grown Ups offers nothing new in terms of plot or character dynamics. It's a typical "old-friends-reuniting" storyline, but it certainly is hilarious! It kept me in stitches and on many occasions had me laughing so hard, I was near tears.

The 5 friends come together at a weekend getaway to attend the funeral of a former teacher who helped inspire them. They bring along their families and at the beginning everyone is dealing with certain problems, but as is the case in these kinds of movies, it will all reach a happy conclusion and some will learn major lessons about themselves.

The performances are solid from an all-star cast of comedians (Sandler, Rock, James, Schneider, Spade) and includes a hilarious cameo from Steve Buscemi. I was disappointed that Salma Hayek was sadly under-used, but that's just a minor quibble in regards to what is in fact a terrific comedy. Unfortunately, it's not one for the whole family to enjoy as it's a bit too risque for the young ones. (4 out of 5, by Carlisle Johnson)
