Predators (DVD)

The next chapter in the Predator franchise, is closer in tone to the original Arnold Schwarzenegger sci-fi shocker from 1987, and has almost no connection to the abysmal Aliens vs. Predators flicks. It even mentions the events from the Arnie adventure so there is a teeny bit of a common thread linking the movies.

As for this new movie, a bunch of hardcore bad-asses, each from different nationalities, all just drop out of the sky... literally. They wake up in a dense jungle area and soon discover they're actually being hunted by vicious creatures, and we're not even talking about the Predators yet. They do eventually run into the title characters and find themselves in the fight of their lives.

The cast features a couple of unlikely yet inspired choices, such as Adrien Brody and Topher Grace, and also a surprise cameo from Laurence Fishburne. The acting in general is decent enough, but it's the tense action scenes which certainly provide the ample thrills. Alas, the plot is inconsequential and also a bit of a downer at the end, but there is a surprise twist just beforehand which manages to freshen things up slightly. Good value entertainment!
