At first, Bullock presented Hitler as an actor and cynic who believed mainly in his own ambition, an opportunist mountebank. Since then he has evolved a view which incorporates the possessed aspect of Hitler which Hugh Trevor-Roper emphasized - Trevor-Roper saw the Nazi as a 'sincere' idealist with a demented ideal. Thus, to Bullock, Hitler becomes an actor who is possessed by his own act. This is an invaluable starting point for any assessment of the German dictator. Review by Ron Rosenbaum, whose work includes 'Explaining Hitler' (Kirkus UK)

PENGUIN HISTORY

Alan Bullock's Hitler is acclaimed all over the world as an outstanding biography.

In addition it remains the most balanced and authoritative history of the Third Reich, providing an absorbing and readable account of one of the most extraordinary careers ever.

The sources for his exhaustive study included the massive German archives, evidence given at the Nuremberg trials, and countless documents, speeches, memoirs, and diaries of men in close contact with the Führer.
