Today's Georgia was once part of a much larger region of the
Southeast claimed by Spain and known as La Florida. After the
failure of Lucas Vasquez de Ayllon's coastal settlement in 1526 on
the coast of Georgia, French Huguenots established two small
forts--one at Port Royal Sound and a second on the St. Johns River.
Although neither French settlement fell within the present-day
boundaries of Georgia, they were contained within France's larger
claim to the Southeast. In response to France's settlements, Spain
sent a large force to La Florida to expel the French and begin
building a series of forts and religious outposts from St.
Augustine northward to Port Royal. Thus, the history of military
fortifications associated with Georgia involves some forts outside
the state's current boundaries. The book focuses on the various
fortifications in Georgia, and will look into the colonial,
antebellum, Civil War, and modern era. There is an emphasis on the
Civil War as a greater number were built during that conflict, such
as Fort McCallister.
