Arnie is back in a leading role for the first time since
Terminator 3: Rise Of The Machines, exactly 10 years ago. Since then he's served two terms as Governor of California, divorced his wife after 25 years, and gave memorable cameo appearances in
The Expendables movies. But now at age 66, he's ready for full-time acting again, and he returns with this surprisingly enjoyable action movie.
Arnie plays Sheriff Ray Owens, who presides over a small town near the U.S./Mexico border. He has a small contingent of deputies, and they don't get much action in their neck of the woods. So when a drug kingpin escapes F.B.I. custody and is headed their way to cross the border, accompanied by his entourage of heavily-armed thugs, Sheriff Owens knows he and his deputies have to make a stand.
It's a straightforward plot, but it still manages to dish up quite a few surprises along the way. The action scenes are inventively filmed and quite thrilling. Plus the cast in general manage to lift the movie even higher: Forest Whitaker plays the F.B.I. agent in charge of recapturing the druglord, Johnny Knoxville plays one of the townsfolk who has an affinity for weapons of all sizes and is only eager to help the sheriff, and Peter Stormare does his brilliant menacing best as one of the main bad guys.
And as for Arnie... yes he DOES look old, but boy can he still pull it off. His character is the world-weary seen it all type who knows he's advancing in age and mirrors how he probably feels in real-life regarding getting back to acting. But the role is perfectly played with the right amount of bravado and brevity. I certainly enjoyed it, and found it to be an enjoyable action-packed adventure that doesn't take itself too seriously yet manages to keep you entertained from start to finish. Terrific! (4 out of 5, by Carlisle Johnson)
Action icon Arnold Schwarzenegger makes his much-anticipated return to the big screen in Korean director Kim Jee-woon’s hard-hitting U.S. directorial debut,
The Last Stand.
After leaving his LAPD narcotics post following a bungled operation that left him wracked with remorse and regret, Sheriff Ray Owens moved out of Los Angeles and settled into a life fighting what little crime takes place in sleepy border town Sommerton Junction. But that peaceful existence is shattered when Gabriel Cortez, the most notorious, wanted drug kingpin in the western hemisphere, makes a deadly yet spectacular escape from an FBI prisoner convoy.
With the help of a fierce band of lawless mercenaries led by the icy Burrell, Cortez begins racing towards the US-Mexico border at 250 mph in a specially-outfitted Corvette ZR1 with a hostage in tow. Cortez’s path: straight through Summerton Junction, where the whole of the U.S. law enforcement, including Agent John Bannister will have their final opportunity to intercept him before the violent fugitive slips across the border forever.
At first reluctant to become involved, and then counted out because of the perceived ineptitude of his small town force, Owens ultimately rallies his team and takes the matter into his own hands, setting the stage for a classic showdown.
