The Crimson Pirate (DVD)

This was probably the last really good pirate movie for many, many years...before the genre was revived recently by the Pirates of the Caribbean series. A young, athletic, fair-haired Burt Lancaster does just about everything short of actually winking at the camera!

He appears here with his former real-life trapeze partner, Nick Cravat, who plays the part of a mute. The romantic leading lady is smouldering English actress Eva Bartok, while Torin Thatcher plays Humble Bellows – the pirate ship’s first mate; and James Hayter is marvellous as Elihu Prudence, a professor/inventor who is many years ahead of his time. See if you can spot unbilled Christopher Lee and Dana Wynter amongst the “extras” of the cast!

The Technicolor photography is of a rich, almost chocolate-boxy kind that we no longer seem to see very much of.
The whole thing is done with tongue-in-cheek...and the many (bloodless!) action scenes are superbly choreographed. It really is family Entertainment with a capital “E”...and I don’t hesitate in giving it five stars!

In the late 17th century, Captain Vallo, his trusty mute partner Ojo and his crew of nefarious pirates scour the Caribbean searching for ships to plunder. This light hearted action romp has everything you would expect from a pirate film; scurvy men, a big pirate vessel, swordfights and a damsel in distress!
