The sixty-four sites described in this book are a testament to the
contribution that Afro-Americans have made to Virginia history over
the last four centuries. The buildings they constructed, the
churches in which they worshiped, and the schools in which they
studied preserve the story of these contributions in visible and
often dramatic ways. These sites have been designated by both the
state and national historical registers as worthy of preservation.
