During the last two decades of the 20th century there was a
considerable improvement in the design of port and berth
structures. The purpose of this volume is to give guidelines and
recommendations on some of the main design criteria for the
planning and construction of modern port and berth structures. The
book also includes material from many of the lectures by the author
on berth and port structures in the Norwegian Institute of
Technology, Department of Port and Ocean Engineering, Norway,
Chalmers Institute of Technology, Department of Hydraulics, Sweden,
and on postgraduate courses arranged by the Norwegian Society of
Chartered Engineers. The key topics discussed include: ship
dimensions and ship wind; layout of port and channels; manoeuvring
and berthing operations; safety aspects in layout and design of
berth structures; design loads on berth structures; solid and open
berth structures; corrosion of steel sheet piles; fender design;
and deterioration and repair of concrete in marine environments.
