Ably directed by Shekhar Kapur: this superb study of the life of Queen Elizabeth 1 in 1558 won numerous international awards – including an Oscar (for Best Makeup; out of the seven categories in which it was nominated). Intelligently made; it can be enjoyed even by those who normally give “costume” pictures a miss.

Cate Blanchett is nothing short of perfection in the leading role, and the large cast also includes Geoffrey Rush, Christopher Eccleston, Joseph Finnes, Daniel Craig, Richard Attenborough, Jeremy Irons…and the late great Sir John Gielgud as the Pope – in his last-ever screen appearance.
The camera work is faultless, and David Hirschfelder does a capable job of the grand musical score; and deserving better than simply a nomination for an Oscar.

Purist historians may point out that certain dramatic liberties have been taken here and there – but they in no way interfere with the overall historical narrative, or the entertainment value of the production.
