The mood is set right from the opening credit, that reads: THIS FILM WAS MADE BY:... a whole lot of people!" It tells the refreshingly original story that was adapted from a children's book of the same name. All the story needed was a top-class group of animators with the gift of zany humour and energetic imagination - which it found at Sony - and you have a top-class movie! As with similar animated features like Flushed Away, etc, it has to be seen more than once in order to pick up all the subtle little bits of humour you missed the first time round.

For that reason, it is not really a tiny kidies' picture... and while the little ones probably will enjoy it for the fast action and the dazzling colours, it is aimed far more at fhe funnybones of Goon Show-minded adults! The voices for the animated characters are provided by the likes of James Caan; Mr T; Benjamin Bratt, and many others. The background musical score by Mark Mothersbaugh is a perfect compliment to the story; being neither syrupy sweet nor overtly strident.

It is a comedy, yes... and a satire - yet at the same time, also a very good allegory regarding father-and-son relationships. Basically, it is about life in the town of Swallow Falls, that faces an economic downturn with the collapse of the sardine market. Unpopular local nerd Flint Lockwood (Bill Hader) becomes a self-driven teenage inventor who, after concocting many disatrous concepts like Spray-On Shoes; a hair un-balder; rat-birds; and a flying car that didn't, finally goes over the top and builds a microwave machine capable of converting water molecules into food! The initial results are great, but the long-term effects are far from what Flint had intended!

The whole thing is well-worth viewing, even if only for the beautiful colours - the best we've seen since Disney's Monsters Inc of a few years back.

When Flint Lockwood’s latest contraption accidentally destroys the town square and rockets up into the clouds, he thinks his inventing career is over. Then something amazing happens as delicious cheeseburgers start raining from the sky. His machine actually works!

But when people greedily ask for more and more food, the machine starts to run amok, unleashing spaghetti tornadoes and giant meatballs that threaten the world!

Now it’s up to Flint, with the help of weather girl Sam Sparks and Steve, his talking monkey assistant, to find some way to shut down the machine before the world is covered in super-sized meatballs!
