Inspired by Herman Melville's Billy Budd, Claire Denis's Beau Travail is a stunning combination of literature, music, poetry and dance that explores the near-mythical world of the French Foreign Legion.

Denis Lavant stars as Galoup, a sergeant-major whose position and power are threatened when the bravery and heroism of new recruit Sentain attracts the attention of the platoon's commandant.

Enraged, Galoup plots Sentain's downfall, a doomed course of action that leads to his own undoing.

Mesmerizing and odd

One of the best films by one of the greatest woman directors. Not who you might expect to make a film about the French Foreign Legion, but Denis is no ordinary director. In a hear haze, the men exercise in a form resembling dance, practice, squabble, and deal with a peculiar, runty little officer. It's oddly dreamy, yet holds your attention throughout
