This Ron Howard delight won two Oscars: for Best Special Effects, and for Best Supporting Actor (veteran Fox star, Don Ameche)
A peaceful alien lifeform from the planet Antrea established an outpost on Earth some ten thousand years ago. A subsequent earthquake caused the majority to evacuate, but some twenty of their number had to stay behind – encased in individual cocoons on the ocean floor. Now, the Antreans have returned to rescue their comrades...and the cocoons are removed from the ocean with the help of boat owner Jack (Steve Guttenberg) and placed in a private swimming pool that contains healing powers. Three s.o.f.s from a nearby old-age home trespass into the pool and experience its water’s benefits – and a “fountain of youth” legend soon spreads to the other seniors of the residence.
Despite their then ruining the Antreans’ recovery schedule, Walter (big Brian Dennehy) kindly agrees to take some thirty of these seniors back to Antrea – where they will never age!
The ending, and Jack Horner’s musical score, are treats in themselves – not to mention the appearance of young Tahnee Welch, the obvious daughter of Raquel you-know-who!
If you missed it on the Big Screen: catch it now on DVD!
Three elderly friends (Don Ameche, Wilford Brimley and Hume
Cronyn), in a Florida retirement home, discover a swimming pool
that renews their energy and gives them a new lease of life. The
pool is full of cocoons belonging to a group of friendly aliens in
human disguise.
