Probably the best (though not necessarily my favourite) Hitchcock movie, this gives a clear early example of Sir Alfred's oh-so-successful audience manipulation technique - the now-famous "cigarette-lighter incident" being the example here. Two men - tennis pro Guy Haines (Farley Granger) and psychotic Bruno Anthony (superbly played by Robert Walker, who died far too young) engage in a casual conversation while on a train together. It appears that each has a peoson in their life that they would rather be without.

In Guy's case, it is his "easy" though very attractive wife Miriam (Kasey Rogers) who is already filing for divorce - and he wants to move on in order to marry Barbara Merton (Ruth Roman); daughter of Senator Merton (Leo G Carroll). With Bruno, it's his domineering father (Jonathan Hale). Bruno mentions light-heartedly that the two men should commit the perfect crimes by each disposing of the other's “problems.”
To Guy's horror, Bruno then murders Miriam – and promptly demands quid pro quo!

Barbara Morton (Alfred Hitchcock's daughter)'s resemblance to Marion is deliberate, and the climactic fight on an out-of-control carouel is worth the price of admission alone!
Guy Haines (Farley Granger) and Bruno Antony (Robert Walker) meet by chance in a train carriage. After some idle chat in which it transpires that each man has someone in their lives they would like to dispose of, Bruno proposes that he kills Guy's wife, in return for Guy murdering Bruno's father. Guy is appalled, but when his wife is murdered he realises that Bruno is intent on carrying out the 'deal', whether Guy wants to or not.
