This, Walt Disney’s first post-WW2 animated feature, was released in 1947 by RKO Radio with apparently little fanfare. I can’t understand why. I enjoyed it so much that I bought the DVD myself!
The movie is hosted by Jiminy Cricket (from Pinocchio) and is actually two stories in a row. The first – which is sung/narrated by singer Diana Shore – is “Bongo, the Circus Bear.” Jiminy plays the 78 r.p.m. recording of this one so as to make a sad-looking doll and teddy smile! Strangely enough, “Bongo” was written by Sinclair Lewis (of Elmer Gantry fame.) As with Disney’s previous Dumbo, it is less than subtly anti-circus!
The heroine – Lulubelle – must rate as Disney’s undoubtedly cutest-ever animated female creation!
The second story is told at real-live child actress Luana Patten’s party by puppeteer Edgar Bergen (best known today as father of actress Candice Bergen), and his two famous puppets, Charlie McCarthy and Mortimer Snerd. It’s simply a rerun of the “Jack and the Beanstalk” tale, with the three animated Jacks being Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, and Goofy!
The dumb giant is an almost loveable “Baby Huey” kind of character, who appears to the real-live actors right at the end!
Two different animated stories produced by the Disney studios.
'Bongo' is based on a children's story by Sinclair Lewis and tells
the tale of a lonely circus bear who finds love in the wilderness.
'Mickey and the Beanstalk', which features live-action sequences,
casts Mickey Mouse (voice of Walt Disney), Donald Duck (Clarence
Nash) and Goofy (Pinto Colvig) in a variant of the familiar tale,
with the trio climbing a magic beanstalk in an attempt to rescue a
singing harp.
