This emotionally-draining drama features terrific performances from a relatively unknown cast (the most well-known face is a plain-looking Mariah Carey in a supporting role), but yet each member of the cast steps up admirably to make you believe and sympathize with the plight of these characters.

Oscar-nominated Sidibe (in a star-making performance) plays the title character, Precious. She's 16, pregnant with her second child, abrasive with her fellow school pupils, and faces a volley of constant abuse everyday from her soul-destroying mother. Precious is fat, unattractive, and has no confidence or belief in herself. But when she gets placed in a school for "special" kids, she forms a bond with her fellow "troubled" classmates and also finds care and warmth from an appreciative teacher.

Unfortunately, things aren't all that cut and dried, the emotional crux of the matter is the drama between Precious and her mother, (played by Mo'Nique, in a scary, Oscar-winning performance), and their relationship is what drives the story, to some unexpected places, which are best discovered on your own. Precious is a tough film to watch, but it's one which deserves attention and ultimately should restore some hope in how being a help to others should not be taken for granted. Excellent! (4 out of 5, by Carlisle Johnson)

Set in Harlem in 1987, Claireece “Precious” Jones is a sixteen-year-old African-American girl born into a life no one would want.

She’s pregnant for the second time by her absent father; at home, she must wait hand and foot on her mother, a poisonously angry woman who abuses her emotionally and physically.

School is a place of chaos, and Precious has reached the ninth grade with good marks and an awful secret: she can neither read nor write. Precious may sometimes be down, but she is never out. Beneath her impassive expression is a watchful, curious young woman with an unshakeable sense that other possibilities exist for her.

Threatened with expulsion, Precious is offered the chance to transfer to an alternative school, Each One/Teach One. Precious doesn’t know the meaning of “alternative,” but her instincts tell her this is the chance she has been waiting for.

So begins a journey that will lead her from darkness, pain and powerlessness to light, love and self-determination.

Having eventually won 2 Academy Awards, including Best Supporting Actress and Best Adapted Screenplay, Precious was also nominated for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actress in a leading role.
