Bite The Bullet - (1975) (English & Foreign language, DVD)

With two Oscar nominations, this slightly overlong (131 minutes) tale of a gruelling cross-country horse race is an otherwise above-average Western that is based on fact.

A wide variety of people enter for the event. Most are simply after the winning prize money (including the side bets they have placed on themselves), though there are other reasons as well... and one entrant has a private agenda!

With Charles Bronson not being available, Gene Hackman heads up the cast, and the other lead players include James Coburn, Candice Bergen, Ben Johnson (this was one of his last pictures), Jan-Michael Vincent (remember him in TV's Airwolf?), Ian Bannen, Dabney Coleman, and Sally Kirkland.

Excellently photographed, and with an Oscar-nominated musical score by Alex North; director Richard Brooks was able to use a punch-line ending similar to this one on his later work, The Professionals that starred Burt Lancaster and Lee Marvin.

All in all: great entertainment!! But why so l-o-n-g?
