George Clooney has moved on from the Ocean's films and finally has a serious role in which to display his acting talent, and he doesn't disappoint. He received an Academy Award nomination for this role, and it's easy to see why. He plays a shadowy 'fixer' for a big-time law firm, but he's disillusioned with his job, struggling to be a single divorced dad, and he owes money because of a failed business venture. This all affects him as he's tasked with fixing a problem that could affect a 3-billion dollar lawsuit. And with that much money at stake, events soon spiral out of control.
Clooney brilliantly conveys someone who wants to do the right thing, but has spent all his life covering up for people who have consistently done the wrong things. This puts him on a collision course with an ambitious lawyer, played by Swinton in an Oscar-winning role. Once the stakes are raised, the tension begins to mount and you're never quite sure what will happen next.
A justifiably complex and suitably intriguing corporate thriller, giving one insights into just how much backroom dealing and negotiating goes on in big, faceless corporations. (4 out of 5, by Carlisle Johnson)
Thriller set in the murky world of corporate law. Michael Clayton
(George Clooney) is an in-house 'fixer' at one of the largest
corporate law firms in New York. A former criminal prosecutor,
Clayton takes care of his employer's dirtiest work at the behest of
the firm's co-founder Marty Bach (Sydney Pollack), to whom Clayton
feels a deep loyalty. He arranges top-flight legal services and
skirts through loopholes for their ethically questionable clients.
Though burned out, disillusioned and hardly content with his job as
a fixer, his messy private life has left him inextricably tied to
the firm. Meanwhile, litigator Karen Crowder (Tilda Swinton) finds
her entire company's future hinging on the outcome of a
multi-billion dollar settlement overseen by Clayton's friend, star
lawyer Arthur Edens (Tom Wilkinson). When Edens snaps and decides
to blow the whistle on the questionable case, sabotaging the
defence, Clayton finds himself in the centre of a conspiratorial
maelstrom where he must decide between his loyalty and his
conscience.
