Set in the future, the popularity of technology has led to an amalgamation of Facebook and The Sims
, known as "Society". Only instead of controlling digital characters on a computer screen, you actually control real-life characters in a real-life environment. The creator, Ken Castle, is also responsible for the popular "Slayers" - a multiplayer online game, where once again, players control real-life warriors battling each other to the death in a no-holds barred Call Of Duty
kind of way. These warriors are death row prisoners, all with one goal in mind: to survive to the end of the game and get their freedom.
One of the "warriors" is Kable, a former soldier who has a family waiting on the outside for him. He's also the most successful so far in the game, and his freedom is near. But he soon realizes the game creators won't allow him to leave alive because of secrets which he unwittingly knows. And with his family being targeted, he has to find a way out of the game and into the real world to save them and bring down the baddies.
That's the plot, and yes, it's mildly original and features some nifty visuals, but to be honest, the first half of the movie is almost all set in the game so it can be quite headache-inducing as the director seems to favour rapid-fire editing, which leave the viewer wondering just what exactly is going on most of the time. The second half of the film becomes a typical chase movie, and I personally thought it was a marked improvement.
The acting was almost non-existent, but it's not too bothersome as one is mostly here for the experience. And what an experience, as the film most times goes a tad over the top with all the bloodiness, including flying limbs, decapitated heads, and repetitive explosions. All in all, it's a wild ride, and might be appreciated by those who actually enjoy these sort of RPG games. Unfortunately, that's not me. (by Carlisle Johnson)
Gerard Butler stars as Kable, condemned criminal and globally famous super-soldier in the ultimate multiplayer game, "Slayers.” Human controllers direct each thought and move of real-life prison inmates battling in hyper-intense environments – where the goal is freedom and the penalty is death.
But when Kable suddenly decides he wants out, his rebellion threatens the twisted plans of game creator Ken Castle, who will stop at nothing to crush the renegade commando in this taut, adrenaline-packed action-thriller.
