Co-produced by Steven Spielberg for Sony/Columbia, this brilliant animated feature lost out in the Oscar stakes only to Happy Feet. But then so did Disney’s equally good Cars.
“DJ” (Mitchell Musso,) “Chowder” (Sam Lerner,) and Jenny (Spencer Locke) are three pre-teenagers whose homes are in the close proximity of a menacing-looking wooden house that is owned by unbelievably crusty old Horace Nebbercracker (Steve Buscemi.) Anything that lands on his lawn just disappears…or at times can actually be seen being eaten by the house itself! Naturally no adults – including the police – will listen when the children tell them of these occurrences.
DV’s parents spend a night out at Halloween, leaving him in the care of Elizabeth “Zee” (Maggie Gyllenhall) – the baby sitter from hell! DV keeps the monster house under close observation through his telescope…and watches in horror as it devours Zee’s weird boyfriend – and two police officers! DJ, Chowder and Jenny then take it on themselves to investigate.
Probably a tad scary for very young children, this movie is great fun; quite moving at times – and wraps up every loose end at the end.
Recommended if you want something really entertaining…but different!
Three kids DJ (Mitchel Musso), Chowder (Sam Lerner), and Jenny
(Spencer Locke) discover that the house across the street from DJ's
is alive. It eats anything that goes on its property. They try to
convince the babysitter (Maggie Gyllenhaal), the police, and some
weirdo named Skull (Jon Heder). They try to unravel the mystery of
the house and they have to go inside to find that the house is
voiced by Kathleen Turner. Oh my god, it's Kathleen Turner! Run for
the hills! Anyway, this movie is PG-rated, great for kids, and got
two-thumbs up from Ebert & Roeper.
