Meet Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp): a somewhat eccentric pirate who projects as being both cocky and laid back at the same time. He’s a kind of midway point between a very young Burt Lancaster, and Keith Richards (around whom Depp largely moulded his character!) On viewing the early “rushes” Disney executives accused Depp of ruining the scriptwriters’ conception…but he proved them wrong by winning a well-deserved Best Actor Oscar for his role here. His eye makeup is heavy, though not nearly as over-the-top as that worn by Malcolm McDowell in Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange.

With high-production values and effects, it’s all a lot of action-packed fun. Sparrow and blacksmith’s apprentice Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) form an uneasy alliance in order to rescue the Governor’s daughter Elizabeth Swan (Keira Knightly) – with whom Turner is madly in love – from Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush), the captain of The Black Pearl, a vessel that is sometimes also captained by Sparrow.

Yes, there are many other plots and sub-plots as well…and even the oldies, who remember legendary swashbuckling heroes of yesteryear – like Douglas Fairbanks and Errol Flynn – will relish in what director Gore Verbinski has dished up in this one!
