Double-bill of Gracie Fields romantic comedies. In 'Love, Life and
Laughter' (1934) she stars as Nellie Gwyn, a pub landlady who meets
Prince Charles of Ruritania (John Loder) at a fancy dress ball
while dressed as a glamorous showgirl. The prince falls in love
with her and decides to renounce his royal life. But when his
father, the King of Ruritania, dies, he realises that he is
duty-bound to rule his country and must return from whence he came,
leaving Nellie behind. In 'Sing As We Go' (1934), Fields plays
Gracie Platt, a plucky Lancashire millworker who finds herself out
of a job when the textile mill where she works is forced to close
for the summer. She heads off to fun-filled Blackpool, taking a
series of summer jobs that eventually lead to her meeting a
business magnate, Sir William Upston (Lawrence Grossmith). With all
her charm, Gracie convinces him to invest in the financially
strapped mill and the jobs of her colleagues are saved. The famous
final scene, in which the millworkers return to the re-opened mill
while Fields leads them in the rousing title song, has become an
iconic film moment.
