Collection of classic 1930s dramas starring Greta Garbo. In 'Anna
Christie' (1930) Garbo plays the title character, a former
prostitute who lives with her father (George F. Marion) on a
broken-down barge. When they rescue Irish sailor Matt Burke
(Charles Bickford) from drowning, he falls in love with Anna. She
is, however, reluctant to reveal details of her past... In 'Mata
Hari' (1931) exotic dancer Mata (Garbo) is working as a German spy
during the war. She seduces General Shubin (Lionel Barrymore) in
order to succeed in her duties. She later falls for and becomes
involved with Lieutenant Alexis Rosanoff (Ramon Novarro). When the
general discovers her affair, however, Mata finds herself having to
take drastic measures to ensure her cover isn't blown. In 'Queen
Christina' (1933) Garbo plays the 17th Century Swedish queen who
escapes an undesirable political marriage by running away and
disguising herself as a man. When she falls in love with a Spanish
ambassador, they have to liaise secretly, realising their destiny
is doomed. In 'Anna Karenina' (1935), adapted from Leo Tolstoy's
classic novel, Anna (Garbo), the wife of a villainous Russian
aristocrat (Basil Rathbone), falls for cavalry officer Count
Vronsky (Fredric March). Anna soon finds herself giving up
everything for love but in time the situation becomes too much to
bear.
