OF A KNIGHT-ERRANT. The Master of Gray dressed himself leisurely, laughing sometimes at his face in the glass. He put on a cloak of golden velvet, and stepped back to see it entire; but as he moved his eyes fell on a little painting beside the mirror. It was the face of a girl he saw; blood glowed in the full lips, tinged the cheek that shone white against a cloud of ruddy hair; her brown eyes were sparkling. With his hand at his throat, Gray stopped; neglected his own beauty for hers. " God be good ! She will be changed now, the poor Mary!" he muttered. "Well?!" and he turned again to the glass. In a moment he flung off the golden cloak. " It is not now a question of Madame la Patissiere," said he, and he changed it for a dark russet. He touched his black curls a last time and was satisfied. In the hall of the Louvre was a pageant to come. Diamonds and white necks shone amid cloth of gold, beards dyed with vermilion and ears bejewelled. The Master of Gray, whose ears, as he knew, needed no jewels, was prodigal of smiles and dainty whisperings. But his glance was restless. Hither and thither he moved among the outskirts of the crowd that clungaround the green carpet where the pageant was to be. At last, as ten lacqueys set down an alabaster fountain in the midst, he saw something that gave him pause. It was a man in black, thin and erect, who walked right on, careless of eyes, to the lolling jewel-laden King. Clinging close to his arm was a girl, tall as he. Her dress was silver-grey, and it showed scarce more of her beauty than the slim white neck; for all her jewels a simple gold chain fell over her breast.
