Penitent Brothellers examines the religious perspectives of
Jacobean dramatist Thomas Middleton, focusing on scenes of
repentance and conversion in his city comedies. Using Middleton's
rarely studied pamphlet The Two Gates of Salvation, Heller
establishes the Calvinist theological background for the
repentances. The study also examines Middleton's portrayal of
sodomy in his satires.
