Starring Humphrey Bogart, Jose Ferrer, Van Johnson, Fred MacMurray and Robert Francis, this flawless naval courtroom drama has been adapted from Herman Wouk’s Puluitzer prize-winning best seller. It was nominated for
seven Oscars – including Best Actor in Humphrey Bogart, whose performance as Captain Queeg has become a definitive Hollywood legend!
Ensign Willis Keith (newcomer Robert Francis) is posted aboard the USS Caine, an old and decrepit minesweeper, on which up-for-retirement Captain DeVriess (Tom Tully) is about to be replaced by one Lt Commander Philip Francis Queeg. Seemingly competent at first, Queeg then goes to pieces when confronted by minor emergency situations – and even routine disciplinary matters! When a typhoon hits the ship: usually placid first officer Steve Meryck (Van Johnson) is therefore forced to take over command; being egged on to do so by treacherous Lieutenant Tom Keifer (Fred MacMurray), a peacetime magazine writer. Keith supports Meryck’s action, and both men are subsequently charged with mutiny. At their trial, they are capably defended by attorney Barry Greenwald (Jose Ferrer).
Every member of the heavyweight cast is well utilised, and de luxe acting performances shine throughout. Keep an eye open for Seaman “Meatball” – a very young Lee Marvin!
When Lt. Commander Queeg (Humphrey Bogart), the man in charge of
the USS Caine, loses his head during a typhoon, his chief officers
feel compelled to relieve him of his post. Upon their return to dry
land, Queeg brings the men up on charges of mutiny. Co-starring
Fred MacMurray, Van Johnson and Jose Ferrer and based on Herman
Wouk's Pulitzer prize-winning novel.
