The Karate Kid - (2010) (DVD)

A remake of the 1984 blockbuster hit probably wasn't deemed necessary by most movie-lovers, but surprisingly, this more-family orientated update was a smash hit at the cinemas and undoubtedly a success on DVD as well.

There are minor changes to the story, our hero is much younger than in the first movie, and also the movie takes place in China. This does seem to add some fresh sparkle to the well-known plot and the movie manages to be highly entertaining and exciting, with fresh moments of humour and it's bound to entertain kids and adults alike.

In his first major starring role, Will Smith's son Jaden manages to be both charming and fresh-faced and is ably supported by a more "grown-up" role for Jackie Chan. The ending is of course predictable, but it's still a terrific movie that provides enjoyable entertainment. (4 out of 5, by Carlisle Johnson)

12-year-old Dre Parker could've been the most popular kid in Detroit, but his mother's latest career move has landed him in China. Dre immediately falls for his classmate Mei Ying - and the feeling is mutual - but cultural differences make such a friendship impossible. Even worse, Dre's feelings make an enemy of the class bully, Cheng.

In the land of kung fu, Dre knows only a little karate, and Cheng puts "the karate kid" on the floor with ease. With no friends in a strange land, Dre has nowhere to turn but maintenance man Mr. Han, who is secretly a master of kung fu.

As Han teaches Dre that kung fu is not about punches and parries, but maturity and calm, Dre realizes that facing down the bullies will be the fight of his life.
