A thriller with a killer hook, and an ending that will make you gasp!
Wilbrook in Western Australia is a sleepy, remote town that sits on the edge of miles and miles of unexplored wilderness. It is home to Police Sergeant Chandler Jenkins, who is proud to run the town’s small police station, a place used to dealing with domestic disputes and noise complaints. All that changes on a scorching day when an injured man stumbles into Chandler’s station. He’s covered in dried blood. His name is Gabriel. He tells Chandler what he remembers. A good debut novel
I was really excited when I received this book. It looked from the cover as though it was going to be an exciting thriller. The whole plot revolves around a man called Gabriel and a man named Heath. One day Gabriel appears at Wilbrook Police Station covered in blood claiming he had been captured by a man called Heath who was going to kill him, but he has managed to escape. Gabriel will be victim number 55. A few days later a man called Heath walks into the same police station claiming he has been attacked by a man named Gabriel and has managed to escape. The two stories are identical so who is the murderer and who is the proposed victim?
Wilbrook is a remote town in West Australia used to minor domestic crimes, whose sergeant is Chandler Jenkins, a single parent to an 11 and 9-year-old struggling to combine his work with bringing up his kids. Suddenly his little station has become besieged by the press as there are not only two potential killers, but whichever one is the guilty party has claimed to have already killed 54 victims. Chandler's job is complicated even more when he is considered too small-time to deal with this case on his own and his one-time partner, Mitch Andrews is brought in to help but in fact, takes over insulting Chandler at every opportunity.
I was really intrigued by this story and enjoyed reading it at the start, but as the plot developed, certain issues began to annoy me. There was no real explanation as to why Mitch is so horrible to Chandler or how their relationship had deteriorated. There were some bizarre decisions as to how both suspects were treated, one of them manages to escape twice, and the other one is put up in a hotel. Certain events just did not seem feasible, and I found the ending really disappointing so much so that it actually spoilt the book for me and lost it a star.
For a debut novel, it has a lot of, and I felt that with just a few subtle changes, it could have been outstanding. I hope this author carries on writing there is a lot of promise.
