Back in the days when the plains were still rich with buffalo,
James Willard Schultz left his New England home as a young man and
went to trade among the Indians. His ready interest and acceptance
of them was appreciated by the tribe of Piegan Blackfeet he joined
for a time and into which he eventually married. Though on the
whole prosaically recounted, some incidents have the freshness of
an immediately inquisite mind. Mr. Robert E. Gard's editing of the
account has lent charm to the episode of the author's marriage to
Natahki, excitement to the hunting and war parties in which Schultz
participated and a current interest to the Indian ways and customs
described. (Kirkus Reviews)
Fascinating, firsthand memoir of a young white man's life among the Piegan Blackfeet in Montana Territory. Includes detailed accounts of religious ceremonies and customs, child-rearing, food preparation, tanning buffalo hides, war parties, raids and much else. Of great interest to ethnologists and students of Native American history.
