After a suicide bomber kills almost 100 Americans living in Saudi Arabia, a team of FBI agents go on an unsanctioned mission into
The Kingdom (Saudi Arabia) to investigate, because a few of the victims were highly respected bureau agents. However, once there they discover that their intrusion is not appreciated by the Saudi authorities.
The first half of the film has very little action taking place, as the FBI agents first have to convince the Saudi police that they are there to help. Here the film is effective in showing how the Middle East tries to maintain law and order without needing or wanting American help. But after the Saudi police decide to accept the FBI agents' offer to help, the action starts and it becomes a race against time. This is when the film ramps up the excitement while also adding tension and intrigue. We see how the agents try to investigate the bombing, while at the same time we see the terrorists planning their next attack. This all adds up to a nerve-wracking last 20 minutes that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
The cast are all excellent, especially Ashraf Barhom as the Saudi police colonel who, at first, resents the Americans being here but soon gains respect for them. The action scenes are extremely well handled, particularly one where a convoy of 4x4's are ambushed on a freeway. It has to be seen to be believed, proving once again the power of movie magic. So, if you're looking for thought-provoking entertainment that manages to be tense and exciting as well, look no further. Enter The Kingdom. (4 out of 5, Carlisle Johnson)
