An excellent film! It is one of those rare entities that manages to satisfy both critics and mass audiences alike.

It starts in 1950, when returning Czechoslovak pilots were imprisoned by the new communist government for colluding with the capitalists during World War II. Flashbacks then take us to 1939 and the story proper. Czechoslovakia is about to be invaded by the Germans, so a small group of pilots flee to Britain where they join the RAF and carry on the fight from there.

Similar in some respects to Flyboys that was set in World War 1: this – the most expensive Czechoslovakian movie ever made – is a wonderful cinematic experience in patriotism, camaraderie, love, sacrifice, and valour. Photography is flawless, and the skilfully-recorded battle sound-effects alone make it well-worth viewing. Don’t ask me to give you the names of the cast. Even if I could spell them, you wouldn’t be able to pronounce them!
Having flown for the British Royal Air Force, Czech pilot Franta Slama (Ondrej Vetdiy) finds himself imprisoned in a post-WWII totalitarian Communist labour camp for "betraying" his country.

Rewinding this story, award-winning director Jan Sverak takes us back to when Franta and his young protege Karel Vojtisek (Krystof Hadek) escape Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia to join the RAF in fighting the Germans. Frustrated at not being allowed to fly against the enemy until they can speak English and their RAF retraining is complete, a strong father/son bond between Franta and Karel quickly develops.

After three months of training they are finally sent into combat, but the stress of the war, plus their mutual love for a married English woman, tests their strong friendship.

In Czech and German with subtitles.
