Killer Elite (DVD)

Killer Elite is not a remake of Sam Peckinpah's 1975 movie. It just shares the same title. It IS however based on the true memoir The Feather Men by Ranulph Fiennes. The British government of course denies everything documented in the book, and subsequently the movie, but if the events are true (as indicated at the beginning of the movie), it wouldn't surprise anyone how corrupt and sinister a first world government can be.

Jason Statham (as Danny) and Robert De Niro (as Hunter) play assassins who are lifelong friends. When Danny gets disillusioned with killing he decies to retire. But he is coaxed back into business a year later when a Middle Eastern Sheik kidnaps Hunter and uses him as collateral to force Danny into assassinating three former British S.A.S. operatives. Once the S.A.S. finds out about the contract, they enlist Spike (another former operative, played by Clive Owen) to try and track down Danny and his team and eliminate them before they can get their job done.

So it's basically Danny and his boys vs Spike and his team. Sounds simplistic, but it managed to impress me with it's action-packed thrills, good acting performances and a totally unpredictable plotline. And if everything really is as true as the filmmakers and the author claim, then it's indeed quite a shocking story. Much better than your average action film, and Statham going to head-to-head with Owen features a brutal yet excellent fight scene. (4 out of 5, by Carlisle Johnson)
